This happened to my boss's son. It was actually very very cute. His kid had a gap (one of his two front teeth!) like your daughter from 2-about 6. His adult tooth is perfect.

I used to work for a pediatric dentist , most children do well with extractions especially with a patient and caring dentist. If you are worried about the gap you can have a flipper made. We use to make them all the time for kids. A flipper is kinda like a retainer with a little fake tooth on it.

yup us! DS#2 fell on his front tooth when he was 1, and after a few weeks we noticed discolouring. our dentist said to leave it, but watch for pain/infection/looseness. After 6 months or so we noticed a bump on his gumline (no pain or looseness) and took him in and found out he needed it removed. he had just turned 2 i believe. anyway, it went well! the entire appointment took 25 mins - he just did some topical numbing, then the needles into the gums with the anesthetic, and then yoinked it out. i wasn't there, but my husband said DS didn't really notice any of it at all and had no reaction. there was a tiny bit of bleeding after, and that was it, he didn't complain of any pain at any time. phew!

anyway, he's just over 2.5 now and has the cutest gap tooth! besides family and friends who see him all the time, no-one has ever asked about it. i was nervous about the eternal gap as well, but turns out it wasn't a big deal. :)

hope it goes well for your little one!!

This happened to a friends daughter. It seems like unless the person 'staring and or asking' actively have a small child people assume said child lost it naturally prior to adult teeth.

I knocked out one of my front teeth in preschool at three. I didn't have an extraction but did lose my tooth.
As far as three year old me thought, I was sooooo cool!
Now as a mom I'd be totally upset and freak out at the preschool but as a kid it was no big deal.
Hugs mama. She's going to be fine.

It wasn't my direct experience, but our neighbours had a similar situation--their just turned 3 year old fell into the edge of the coffee table and broke both front teeth above the gum line and had to have them removed. Her parents were upset-they hadn't begun to think about even taking her to the dentist and were facing more than just a routine visit.
Anyhow, they ended up at a paediatric dentist who did the extraction and within a day she was feeling good! They stuck to softer foods for a few days, but it really didn't take her long to get the swing of life without her front teeth and now they are finally growing in.
It sucks to have to deal with it, but I just want to let you know that their experience was far, far better than they were fearing!

I'm so sorry. I have a friend who's son lost a bottom tooth before age 2. He looks really cute!

I have no experience but I'm so sorry! I would be really upset too, even if you know it's the right thing to do. Poor girl.

Fwiw I feel like by the time kids are old enough to know that it's different, kids will also be starting to lose their baby teeth. So I would be surprised if it's an issue with her peers, but you might have adults asking.

While on vacation, DD tripped and face-planted on the cobblestone walkway and split her front tooth up to the gumline on the side. We saw an emergency dentist and he took out the loose sliver and told us to see our dentist when we got back home. Well, she referred us to a pedi tooth trauma dentist who said that it needed to come out and there was no saving it because there was multiple breaks in the tooth. Fortunately, she said that damage to the adult tooth should be minimal. I was super upset today hearing that it'd have to come out and that she'd have a big gap until her adult tooth comes in. I know this is the healthiest thing for her teeth to remove it, but I'm having such a hard time picturing her with a large hole in her mouth. I'm just afraid people will stare and ask questions, that kids will make fun when she's older, that all her pictures will be with her having a big gap, etc. She's only 2, so we have about 4 years before her adult tooth comes in. It feels like an eternity!

On the practical side, has anyone had an early extraction for their toddler? How was recovery? They are planning on doing a conscious sedation with a drink they'll give her with laughing gas. How did you deal with it emotionally?
