@birdofafeather: I meant books to read to R! I don't read parenting books because I am a failure. :silly: I've been looking for children's potty books to get Sadie used to the idea. Let me know how the no-cry potty solution is though. Maybe you can give me the cliff's notes. ;)

@mrswin: she had a couple bumps last week, but nothing this week. she has stuffed animals as friends (that had to be cleaned, yuck!) but otherwise she pretty much sleeps in her crib only. i did give her probiotics yesterday so i think that accounts for the more poop, but the first incident happened before that.
@photojane: please! i have the no-cry potty solution checked out from the library and going to search for some more.

Oh gosh! Been there. So much empathy.

Maybe start reading some potty books & see how she responds. I've been looking at potty books. If I find a good one, I'll let you know!

@birdofafeather: A more basic issue could be that if she is going more often maybe her bottom hurts or something. Does she have any sort of rash or anything? Could she be bored in her crib? Do you have any toys or things in there to entertain her if she is happy?

My daughter went through a phase of getting completely undressed during nap or in the morning before we got her out of the crib. Luckily, the habit went away on its own pretty quickly and only resurfaced occasionally. It is probably a good potty readiness sign that she can take off her own bottoms, but not great that she's removing her diaper.

@Mrs Green Grass: yep, it's only been in the crib. i'm going to go get some 24m onesies for bedtime. blah.
@skipra: yeah, i tried to do shorts then i realized she could reach under and into the legs. :(

DS has been sticking his hands in his diaper not because he's pooped but because he likes to play with himself. So far our only solution is to put him in onsies and pants (he reaches in if he's in shorts) when he starts doing it.

My sister went through this with my nephew at around the same age. They really just had to keep him in impenetrable clothes during naps (it didn't happen outside of naps). She cut the legs off an old sleeper and put it on him backwards (because he could figure out the zipper).

@edelweiss: poop x2?! OMG. horrible.
@swurlygurl: yeah, it's like she flipped some weird switch in the last week! AH!
@mrswin: thanks! she did have a typical routine, but all of a sudden, she went like 4 times yesterday. so wondering if her bowels are moving more and she's more aware.

@birdofafeather: The LO I looked after was the same age when this started. We figured out that she liked to go first thing in the morning and right at the start of her nap so we made that our first step in the morning and last step before nap. In the morning I would get her up and take her straight to the bathroom to sit on the potty, she was pretty verbal and so we would tell her to go poo :silly: If ANYTHING happened we would have a party! LOL We would clap and just generally make a big deal about going on the potty. I will admit that she also go used to following me and mom into the bathroom so I guess there was some modeling happening too. All considered she picked it up pretty quick and was day trained (underwear) by 21 months.

@birdofafeather: Oh no, that sounds terrifying! I would seriously be living in fear of poop :(
L is getting into the stage of noticing poop too, but I think she's still WAY too young for any sort of potty training - I can't imagine trying yet. Thankfully she doesn't try to take off her diaper, although we do have to make sure to have pants on her or she will play with her snaps.

my friend went through this with her twins. it was poopageddon. they tried lots of different things and eventually settled on a "duct tape belt" wrapped around the waist of the diaper. i know it sounds kind of crude, but it worked.

@mrswin: 18 months. we have been putting her on the potty for a couple months just to try it out and she'll sit there, but not go. we've been signing poop for 6+ months, and she can mostly tell us after the fact if she's pooped if we ask her. i should probably get more serious about putting her on the potty, i guess. what process did you do for potty learning?

@birdofafeather: How old is she? One of the LO's I used to look after started doing this and we started potty learning because she HATED having a dirty diaper (was doing it with pee too). She was super easy to potty train.

after she's gone #2. :(

the last few days, i've looked into the monitor and seen DD taking off her diaper during her nap. it was totally random and i laughed, then put a cloth diaper on her with snaps (she took off disposables first). two days ago, i discovered that she had actually pooped, then took it off during her nap. gross, but it didn't get anywhere.

THEN she was being fussy about an hour after we put her to bed that same day and i had DH check on her because that usually means she pooped. DH smelled it immediately but she had actually gone in her diaper and smeared it everywhere in her crib, on her, on DH. it was HORRIBLE!

we bathed her, cleaned everything and put her in a onesie and pants so she couldn't access her diaper (she was in a tee and diaper only previously because it's so hot in our house).

we had another day where she was reaching in her diaper, etc, but i locked it down during nap again. then this morning, same thing: reached in her diaper (through the top this time with 2-piece pjs) and poop everywhere.

please tell me this is a phase and tell me what i can do to fix this. i NEVER thought my kid would smear poop everywhere (i've heard of it, but didn't think it was a real thing) and now i'm terrified of walking into her room and finding poop everywhere. :(

(i even looked this morning on the monitor when she was fussing around, but the poop did not show up, so i left her since it was an hour before her normal wake up.)

ETA: she's 18 months, sits on her own potty for fun, but doesn't go, and can sometimes accurately tell us if she's gone poop if we ask her and sign. i asked her to tell me when she goes poop next time, but that's gonna take a while, i think.
