I'm sorry you're dealing with this. For me and caring for D it's gotten better but I still use up my sick leave faster than I can earn it, since I get 4 hrs a pay period but take at least a full day off for his appts every month (ivig takes a whole day, gi clinic takes 6ish hours), and that's not counting anyone getting sick or a few hours here and there for other appts.

I wish I could work 32h a week but it's not an option for me right now. I feel like a bad employee sometimes especially since I can't work from home. I try to go above and beyond when I am there though! I also try to be clear about when I will be out. Thankfully my bosses are very understanding and have always said "family first"

No real advice but I feel you mama! Hang in there! ❤

@Lilbear: @yellowbird: @littlebug: Thank you so much! I really appreciate your comments. I think I'm just feeling sorry for myself today because I'm on deadline but I can't get my work done like I should be doing right now.

I will check out the intermittent FMLA, that's a great suggestion. I may have to have surgery in the near future so that would be a big help to not be penalized for that time.

If your workplace qualifies, you can apply for intermittent FMLA for your own health issue. That way your employer can't penalize you for any time you take off related to that diagnosis/condition. I used to take it for my migraines until I got them under control.

It does suck, and it sucks that our work places make us feel that way. But as PPs have said, your health and the health of your family has to take precedence.

I was having a hard time with this recently. I was interviewing for residency positions, my kidney was found to be messed up and I had to have surgery, now my daughter has to get her tonsils out, and my son has been sick a few times. It's been ridiculous. I am just surviving and trying to do the best I can at work but I definitely feel guilty. I've been trying to stay later on days when I have nothing going on. I'm sorry you're dealing with it too.

I was in a similar situation when my DD was 6 months to 1.5 years old. She had a chronic illness that required several hospitalizations during that time, and I missed a lot of work as a result. My supervisors (luckily) were very understanding, but I felt really guilty about all of the time I took off.

At the end of the day, your health and your family have to always come first. If you are not well, you cannot function 100% at work. If your LO is not feeling well, you are the most important and needed person in your LO's world, and of course you both want and need to be there for your LO.

I know it sucks and there is a lot of guilty feelings involved, but you don't really have a choice here. It's awesome that your supervisor has been understanding. If it makes you feel better, you could absolutely let them know that you are aware of the burden your absences are putting on them. Try to not feel too guilty though, because your health and family always have to come first. ❤️

If you have a health issue you are dealing with and work full time in the office, do you have work guilt? Or do you feel like a bad employee? What helps you feel better?

I was out of work on vacation all last week. I am dealing with a health issue right now that has knocked me off my feet--out sick on Monday, went to work on Tuesday but was still no good, went to work today and left early. LOs school called and said they think she has an ear infection which means we will probably have to take her to the doctor tomorrow. DH and I always battle about who takes days off because he's a teacher and hates taking days off.

My supervisor is understanding and I can work from home but I feel like a bad employee...especially because this health issue is something that will be chronic until my doctor and I can get a handle on it.

Seriously my first thought after I got off the phone with her school was to say "Ok, I quit." I have the days to take off but my job is very deadline oriented so the work still has to get done.

I feel like this is going to hurt my career and position within my organization and it makes me feel like I suck at being a good employee.

I'm thinking about having a talk with my supervisor and head of our department (just told my supervisor on Monday) but I'm still worried about my reputation.

Advice? Suggestions?
