@DesertDreams88: I would definitely cover the pillows! Do you have an air purifier running as well? I think those help. And hopefully you have NO carpets in your room? We just suffer from dust allergies in my house, I find keeping the bedrooms as dust-free as possible helps. So we have no carpets in our rooms, and allergy covers on everything and allergen-free bedding. I also run air purifiers in both kids bedrooms that help clear the air.

I'm so sorry for your husband, that sounds brutal!

Yeah, I would definitely not line dry anything outside. I feel like it negates the whole not opening the windows thing. Especially if you're line drying any sheets or towels, even if they aren't directly used by your DH.

@DESERTDREAMS88

No specific advice bc we're in the same boat. My husband has severe allergies and we are pretty much doing all the things you're doing. To make matters worse, he has glaucoma so he can't take OTC medications. But I do want to say hugs to you. I'm sure for the person with the allergies it's hard and difficult but it's also maddening for the spouse. :bummed:

@DesertDreams88: I hear you. Like I said, it took me YEARS to convince my DH about the dairy. But it's an all or nothing thing that really makes a huge difference. Try to convince him to take one week off.

I have pretty bad allergies. Here's what I do that helps. Each thing helps just a little, but it adds up. I know so some of these have already been listed:

-Vacuum every 2-3 days (especially the bedroom!)
-No open windows
-Buy the best furnace filter you can get and change it every 2-3 months
-Use stand alone air purifier for the bedroom (I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-HPA200-True-Allergen-Remover/dp/B00BWYO3EM/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1524071180&sr=8-19&keywords=holmes+air+purifier)
-Wash bedding at least once a week and have dust mite protectors on pillows and the mattress
-Don't dry anything outside
-Shower before bed and also after being outside on a bad pollen day
-Wash all clothes frequently (including jackets)- use fragrance free detergent and don't use dryer sheets!
-for medication, I use Allegra (2 pills instead of 1) and Flonase

-I actually have a lot of food issues too, and I agree with PP that eating less dairy really helped.

-Use Vanicream brand shampoo, lotion, soap, etc. Anything with fragrance is really bad for allergies and eczema (no way could I use essential oils)

@DesertDreams88: I hope they help! The Afrin works right away, but you’re only supposed to use it for 3 days or so at a time (I do it more than that all the time though) and the Flonase takes some time to build up effectiveness. So your husband could start both today and then stop the afrin after a few days and hopefully the Flonase would be in full swing by then

@bhbee: oops, I meant line drying clothes outside. Edited original post to clarify. I'll definitely do the pillows.

@Baby Boy Mom: I will mention it to him here and there but I'd be shocked if he did it. He loves cheese. He is picky and is allergic to bananas, melons, nuts, and lettuce, so he is already very limited.

@Bluebonnet: I will suggest more showering to him. He showers at night but not frequently. It makes his eczema worse and he has to do about 10 minutes of lotioning every square inch after showers.

Yes I think he should go back to the otc meds more regularly and switching them up.

We are going to try some essential oils too.

@DesertDreams88: Is he showering before bed? If not, he needs to (to wash off the pollen from the day) - otherwise he likely has pollen in his hair and then is sleeping on a pollen covered pillow all night long which exacerbates the issue.

Agree with @bhbee: on the suggestion of mattress protectors and pillow protectors. Bed, Bath, and Beyond has pillow and mattress protectors specifically for people with dust mite and other allergy issues.

Another tip - constantly switch up antihistamines and decongestants so he doesn't use them so long they are no longer effective.

See if an acupuncturist could also help (in addition to the allergist and all the things above).

@DesertDreams88: I’m so sorry, sounds like he has really tried everything. I hear you on the shot vials, I would think it would be worth waiting. But I would 100% start doing pillows! (Yours too even if he doesn’t sleep directly on them.) extra hot wash now and look into covers! Ours weren’t too expensive on their own (more more for full bedding set). I am thinking of ordering some to take on trips too, they really make a difference for me.

ETA if you don’t dry does that mean indoor air dry everything?? I didn’t know that one.

If he’s eating dairy he should stop. My DH was in a similar situation and it has taken me years and years to convince him but I finally have. It doesn’t make the allergy go away but it relieves the symptoms by a lot.

@Ms. RV: @JennyPenny: @bhbee: he tried nasal strips a long time ago and didn't like them, but I think it's worth trying again. That was before any surgery so things are different now.

@JennyPenny: I am going to Target today and I will check those out.

@bhbee: he can take sudafed, Claritin D, and Zyrtec D but his body is basically desensitized to those, he took them for at least 10 years daily.

I will have him ask his allergist about the shot formulation. I know his just got them remixed in December though and it is $800 for a new mix, which is an entire after-tax paycheck for us :(

Yes he is on cingulair daily, or something similar - I know that was his prescription at one point.

We have our bed double covered - protector, sheet, protector, sheet. But our pillows arent covered and they're probably due for another wash, so I'll think about both! He has been wanting a new pillow too.

I just read that drying clothes outside is bad for allergies, which makes total sense. Now I feel bad that I've been doing that :( guess I'll stop now, for his load.

oh man that's rough. I also have bad allergies and I'm due for a shot today!

can he take sudafed? (the good kind behind the counter) that is the only quick fix for me. it's not 100% but it definitely helps if I keep it up.

I agree nasal strips are worth trying, they can help me some.

not a quick fix, but could be worth asking for a reformulation on shots given the seasons that are worst for him? they redid mine last year to try to maximize the benefit. you may not want to pay for that (depending on your insurance) until the vial is empty though.

also not a quick fix since it's only RX (I think?) but has he tried singulair? that makes a huge difference for some people (it's mostly an asthma med but can also help allergies)

another not super quick fix since you have to order - I don't know how bad your dust mites are right now in your area, but I've definitely found that good allergy covers (so under the sheets) make a big difference. I have our mattress and box spring covered, and all the pillows (including my kids, because I sometimes lay down with them for a bit and I find even that can bother me!). that plus keep washing sheets frequently on hot. I've also heard getting rid of carpet helps but obviously that's a huge task.

Another vote for nasal strips. Also, has he tried any nasal sprays. Afrin is great for immediate relief and Flonase is good for longer lasting relief. I have the rx Flonase but I think there's an OTC version too.

My husband has severe nature-based allergies (grass, pollen, ragweed, etc). He spent most of his life not being able to breathe through his nose due to allergy-induced nasal polyps. He has had surgery for this issue twice in the past 5 years. He has gotten allergy shots weekly for about 3 years and just moved to biweekly. He is already doing nasal rinses and OTC meds. No vaporub bc of eczema and no humidifier bc of asthma. We washed all our sheets (dust mite allergies), changed the air filter, vacuum, and don't open the windows. But he still can't breathe through his nose and hasn't been able to for 2-3 weeks :( his ENT can't see him until the 30th.

Please give me your best tips or remedies for sinuses and allergies. Looking for something we haven't tried before!
