@owlmom: Still fighting over here as well... almost 5 weeks. It's so painful, but I know it WILL get better. I can't fathom giving up yet when it could be right around the corner :)

@geekinheels: Thanks for all your advice. I'm so sorry you dealt with this too. I'm in the same boat - it may mean the end of breastfeeding if I can't get rid of the yeast. I usually have a pretty high pain tolerance, but the thrush pain is intense. I'll definitely give a diet revision, grapefruit seed extract, and then gentian violet a try. Thanks for the tip on the vaseline!

@Mrs. Bee: Until yesterday, LO had been taking medicine as well. But since her symptoms have cleared up, her pediatrician doesn't want to refill her prescription, which has me stressed out. A probiotic for her is a great idea! Thanks!

could it be that you're passing the infection back and forth and your LO could benefit from taking probiotics herself too?

So sorry to hear about the thrush! At its worst, thrush made it feel like I had razor blades ripping through my breasts for up to 2 hours after each feeding, and I couldn't even hold my own baby close to me because everytime anything pressed againt my chest it would hurt again. That, and mastitis, was what made me quit breastfeeding with my first. :-(

In addition to what you've already tried, I would suggest keeping sugar and yeast intake as low as possible (by this, I mean dietary), trying grapefruit seed extract (http://drjaygordon.com/breastfeeding/thrush.html), and lastly, gentian violet. Honestly, the gentian violet wasn't THAT bad...you just have to be careful, and use vaseline on places you don't don't stained. Good luck!

Bump!

Anyone else dealing/dealt with thrush and have suggestions? I'm on week 3 of dealing with it, and I'm starting to get discouraged.

I'm currently fighting what feels like a losing battle with thrush. We've been treating the problem for a week and a half now. Fortunately, the Nystatin prescribed by our pediatrician seems to be working for DD, but I've still got some serious yeast issues. I'm currently rinsing my nipples with a solution of 1 cup of water and 1 Tbsp white vinegar and applying Monistat after every feeding. When we hit the 1 week mark, my OB prescribed a ten day course of Diflucan for me. I'm also taking a probiotic. My lactation consultant told me go bra-less as much as possible, use only 100% cotton nursing pads and change them frequently, skip lanolin (which can create a moisture barrier) and stop rubbing breast milk into my nipples after feedings. Basically, you want to keep things as dry as possible so the yeast doesn't have anything to eat. Hopefully, this will all work. I really don't want to have to use gentian violet, which is probably my next option, because it's supposed to be very staining.

If you are looking for some home remedies there are tons out there. The one that helped me the best was using vinegar to clean off my breast and nipple after each feeding. Also use a bit of vinegar on pump parts and in the laundry on your bras. It helps kill the yeast.

I also used a bit of milk of magnesium swabbed on my breast that really helped. I made sure to wipe that off before her next feeing.

These things were enough to keep us from antibiotics.

Definitely go talk to your pediatrician/family doctor. You will both need to be treated with Nystatin or the equivalent. It can take a while to clear up, but if you are persistent it should go away.

so sorry to hear! no personal experience, but thrush is what made my friend quit breastfeeding. it was painful and after two months of battling it, she threw in the towel and weaned her son.

you can definitely overcome it though!

good luck!

I suspect DD and I may have thrush - it explains the white stuff in her mouth and how sore I have been over the past week. What things did you do when you dealt with thrush?
