Ewww. I would tell other children to keep their hands to themself. It's something I tell my children and other children who touch them at play areas!

As for adults, it's super weird. Unless you are mom/grandma/care taker, why touch?!

People are so weird. My DS has a mohawk (he's only 7 months and it just keeps sticking up and growing that way no matter what we do!) and people touch it all the time. I HATE it. You shouldn't put your hands on any stranger for any reason....ugh.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Why are people so weird?? I just honestly don't understand how people think that's acceptable behaviour.

@MamaMoose: touching "ethnic" hair doesn't stop at childhood and it doesn't always happen with a lead in about curiosity.

DL Hughley talks about an old woman who touched his hair on a plane. He was wearing short locks at the time.

People touch my baby's head a fair amount and say things like "oh I just love baby peach fuzz" and it's never really bothered me. I don't see it as any more of a breach of her personal space as someone holding or cuddling her. Babies get touched a lot.

HOWEVER. If I had a child with hair that was different because of her ethnicity and someone said to me “Oooh, I’ve always wondered what their hair felt like,” it's likely I would punch that person and then follow it up a lecture on how to behave like a normal human.

I don't understand it. I really don't. Our little girls can't really stick up for themselves in that regard yet.

One thing I did as a pregnant lady to ward off all the unwanted touches was to say, "you can touch my belly if I can touch yours". That warded off all but my best friends and the complete whack-a-doos (nothing would have helped with them).

Maybe we should teach our girls to tell their friends that people can only touch their hair if the gesture can be reciprocated. So M's hair doesn't make people particularly curious, which is nice... But when people stroke it, I get really frustrated because they have no idea how much they messed up my carefully balanced washing/moisture regimen!

This is very rude. I guess if you catch the arm and hand reaching out to touch her hair you can physically move them away and explain it's rude to pet people. I use the word pet because that's how I would feel if someone decided to touch my hair with out asking. She isn't a play thing. If the offense already occurred I would ask them why they thought it was appropriate or okay to put their hands on my child? Then I would explain that it's rude.

I have an issue in general with people invading my childs personal space. She is a human too and should have a say. I mean, I as a parent sometimes have to pick her up and move her when she doesn't want to, but sometimes other people get all in her face and grab her hands just because she's young.

I would never touch a kids hair but DD looooves hair (she doesn't have much) so she always touches anyone's head who has lots of hair, regardless of sex or race. She's 16 months so she's just exploring.

yuck, how obnoxious! I have very, very curly hair and have gotten people touching it and "boinging" my curls and it's so annoying. I'm sure it doesn't happen as often as with your lo, but I can sort of commiserate!

@rachiecakes: I have a friend who is obsessed with redheads, so she'd probably want to paw you, too if she saw you.

Compliments are great! Touching without asking is not!

This is so tough. I know children are curious, but adults should really know better. Sorry I don't have any advice  Great article though...

As a redhead, I know the feeling. Someone I just met touched my hair yesterday.

I have mixed feelings. I've probably received as many compliments as I have received negative/creepy attention for having red hair.

- going to read the article

My LOs hair is a little curly cloud, a curly short afro. People do talk about how much they love her hair. So far only a few adults have touched her hair without asking (weirdos!) But it has become more of a problem with kids on the playground. It seems like every kid she meets wants to touch her hair because it's different from theirs and I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle it. I know the smaller kids don't understand, but um, the crumbs in her hair should only be from her!

This is an old blog post from Chocolate Hair Vanilla Care that seems to be making the rounds on my FB page. It's about people touching LOs hair, specifically hair. Perhaps because of the latest controversy over that school banning a little girl from wearing locks and afros.

Here's an excerpt:

"While asking me about my daughter’s hair, please do not start touching it. Just because I am a vanilla parent this does not mean that you have an “in” to touch chocolate hair for the first time. I have had too many people tell me, “Oooh, I’ve always wondered what their hair felt like,” while pawing my daughter. She’s not an animal, she’s a human being.

You see, every chocolate/jam/cheetos handprint on her hair from other children and/or adults is a mark on her dignity. She is small, but she does have personal space and a sense of self-worth. When you invade that space without her permission you are telling her that she has no rights to her body; that her desire to be left untouched is not as important as your curiosity.

Even if your hands are clean, they still leave a an invisible mark."

http://www.chocolatehairvanillacare.com/2011/07/open-letter-to-people-regarding.html
