It won't act as a deterrent and it won't bring her back. It offers limited opportunity for reflection and remorse, or, and this might be going too far, rehabilitation and education. What those men did was beyond terrible, but they are a product of the society in which they grew up. They thought they would get away with it and now they're being offered a degree of notoriety and martyrdom for others who think of women as disposable. </p> <p>I don't think it's helpful at all and it doesn't fit with how the Indian justice system usually works (as I understand it). If anything the notoriety usually leads to copycat crimes.
