@rawrasaur: we are also moving away from purees yet I want to use the last of what I bought since they were lots of $$$$.

We had been feeding him small pieces of what we are at restaurants, but he was diagnosed with an egg allergy last week so we have to be careful now about what he eats.

We haven't unpacked from our move yet, but am hoping to start coming meals for the 3 of us this week.

If anyone has any good recipes let me know!

Right now our typical menu is as follows:

Breakfast:milk
Snack:mum mum
Lunch: fruit and yogurt
Snack:puffs
Dinner: chicken casserole with apples for dessert

I need to increase the lunch and breakfast!

I feel like we are so behind! She is only eating one real meal a day, breakfast. We let her taste whatever is for dinner but I am starting to realize just how unhealthy we eat and what's okay for us is definitely not okay for my little baby. We will be trying to serve her real dinners by the end of this month. Two meals plus unlimited milk access from me (: She hates purées and soft foods...she much prefers chewing food, even though she still doesn't have teeth (:

We are now trying to transition away from purees and encouraging LO to feed herself. Yesterday, I baked apple, pears and banana and cut them up into small pieces and she could pick them up much easier than the slippery items I have been giving her. Tonight I am going to bake sweet potato. We also have tried the oatmeal fingers mentioned before on HB. We do still do pouches for when I didn't get around to preparing a meal for her.

Anyone else starting to change things up?

My LO loves all food except peaches. Or maybe except yogurt? I bought some expensive peach yogurt and he hates it.
Mostly we give him pouches and or jars. He loves sucking on the pouches. I agree Earth's best is good.

Mostly I try to feed him the most "normal" adult type flavours, like chicken casserole, or turkey and gravy (which is funny because I'm vegetarian!) I just think that will make the easiest transition to table foods.

He took a bite of my pizza this weekend and loved it. He had a lick of my ice cream last night.

He did have a choking episode last night and I had to quickly get him out of his high chair, but by the time I unbuckled him, he'd managed to dislodge it on his own. Scary.

Up to now, we've been feeding him one meal at night. Our pediatrician told us he's drinking a lot of formula and to start transitioning him to 3 meals a day. yikes!

He eats a few puffs and yogurt melts, but they are packed with sugar so i limit them. also applechunks.

we just started DS on rice cereal last week...he seems to like it. i'm thinking of trying bananas or avocados next...

if your LO is in daycare, how do you pack solids? and how much are packing? Ex: feeding #1: 3 oz bottle + XX bananas...

@78h2o: I give her the tiniest bites - like a small pinched off piece. She just moves them around her mouth and then they disappear (I never see her swallow) and there is no gagging or issues with textures.

Oh man, and I thought A was eating well. She usually loses interest in the food just as I finish the frozen cube worth, so I haven't tried feeding her more. She also gets some banana in the early morning, She is nowhere near finishing a pouch worth of food in a sitting, though.

@rawrasaur: I know, she went from absolutely refusing to eat solids to being a total pig. She eats a jar of food (!) and a baby mum mum around 1pm, about an hour after her bottle and then again in the evening, around 6pm (not long after nursing). Right now in the evening its usually a jar of food or a pouch and another baby mum mum. She will eat the whole pouch (3oz), but she loses at least 25% of it on her bib. I'm going to try some finger foods in the evening. Does your little one choke or gag at all with the bits of meat and bread? J has started grabbing for stuff, so I'm thinking I will start to share...

@78h2o: So glad she is eating! Cute, cute pictures! I post way too many eating pictures to instagram, haha.

Up until this week, A would eat anything I put into her mouth. She HATES peaches, though, it seems. I usually feed her around 5pm then bathe her and go through her bedtime routine. Sometimes, when she isn't quite tired we have her sit in her highchair while we eat dinner, and she always demands some. I will give her tiny bits of meats and breads. She loves it.

I'm not sure what kind of schedule you all are doing, but I feed her a small amount of rice cereal after her first morning nap, and about an ounce of fruits/veggies before her bedtime routine.

Favorites: Rice cereal, Banana + Avocado, Sweet Potatoes Zucchini
Dislikes: Carrots, Peaches

@MrsScallop: when she was really hating it, I poured the puree on the tray and just let her play with it. She got a few tastes in that way when she put her fingers in her mouth. I've had more success with Earth's Best vs other brands. I have tried them all when feeding her and they really do taste different. Also, she really likes to suck on the pouches though she makes a mess and does lose a bit in the process. Have you tried the pouches? I am afraid to try avocado as I am allergic to it, but pedi said its ok since I don't have a severe reaction. I'm going to try to make her some food this week since I haven't had a chance yet.

@78h2o: my LO is definitely not enjoying them right now. The only thing she seems to enjoy is avocado when mixed with some BM (without BM she is not a fan). She ate baby oatmeal pretty well (with water and BM), but seemed to hate bananas (even when mixed with oatmeal), didn't enjoy pears, nor sweet potato. I have some cubes of apple puree, green beans, and some purchased puree pouches to try, but I'm wondering if/when she will start to enjoy solid foods more or if we should be taking a different approach to meal times. She doesn't have any teeth yet, so I'm paranoid about finger foods.

@78h2o: LO eats everything. Tonight was the first time with mum-mums. Is it normal for them to actually break of a bite? I kept taking the bites out of her mouth. She eats fruits, veggies, likes chicken (pureed), mashed potatoes, refried beans (hey we were at a mexican restaurant!), pretty much anything we will let her put in her mouth.

Just wondering how everyone is doing?

J HATED solids the first few days... she was actually screaming every time she saw me coming with it (sweet potatoes)... made me feel terrible! But then, she magically started to eat them! Her favorite food right now is pears... she literally grabs the spoon as it's approaching so she can speed it into her mouth! She also likes sweet potatoes, carrots, apples, and the apple/banana mix. She's not all that crazy about bananas on there own though, and she hates peas. Hates them! Rice cereal is also a no go.

Oh, she is also really loving feeding herself baby mum mums (rice wafers).

She has two teeth and is sitting really well now, so I might start giving her chunks of food to feed herself.

What are your LOs eating?

I love that we have this thread! LO is ~1 week from being 6 months old, so I have been stressing a bit about really getting started with solids. We have tried some a couple times, but decided to wait to really start up til 6 months.

Have you started preparing?
We bought a high chair and already had some spoons, but beyond that, we are probably not so prepared yet. I'm trying not to worry about it too much, but for some reason the idea of starting solids soon is stressing me out!

What is your must have gear?
Right now I am just so glad we have a high chair. We tried to do some test feeds with LO just sitting on our laps and that made a big mess.

What could you live without?
Not sure yet!

Are you doing purées or BLW?
We are starting with purées because LO doesn't have any teeth yet, so BLW scares me.

Skipping rice cereal?
That has been the plan, but I have considered using baby oatmeal. I'll have to decide soon.

What type of high chair did you get?
Graco Slim Spaces

Anything else feeding related?
Question for you ladies: Do you cook everything when you first start solids (such as avocado and bananas)?

We are technically Dec 2012 (31st) even though I post on the Jan 2013 boards.
Have you started preparing?
Yes we started already!

What is your must have gear?
Bibs, Green Eats spoons, and we use our little glass bowls that come with our dishes

What could you live without?
Right now we are living without a high chair but I want to get one within the next couple of days

Are you doing purées or BLW?
Chunky purees. I make everything myself and its all organic. Easier than I thought it would be! We will move on more towards BLW once she pinches better.

Skipping rice cereal?
We started with Oatmeal but only for 10 days and then we moved on to sweet potato. We have tried sweet potato, pears, peaches, green beans, avocado (hated it) and tomorrow is sweet peas. Her fav so far is sweet potato with peaches coming in a close 2nd.

What type of high chair did you get? Researching now. I wanted a space saver one than goes on our dining chair but not sure it will fit.

Anything else feeding related? She is such an eater! She has only gagged 2 times both with the oatmeal her first time. She wants to have a whoel mouthfull to be satisfied that there is enough in her mouth. And she cries when the food is gone :( She hasnt always been to interested in her milk so I thought it would take longer with the solids.

@MaisyMay: With the high chair you have, do you think it would be ok on a chair that has a little wooden piece connecting the seat to the back like the chair on the left?

We waited until she hit six months. She seemed interested a while ago, but she was gaining well and not quite sitting up, so I didn't see any rush. We started last weekend, so here goes:
Have you started preparing? Yes - I researched homemade baby food and was generally confused by the nine million different approaches to solids
What is your must have gear? I bought a silicone storage tray for homemade purees, one bib, two oxo spoons and a sippy cup. That's about it.
What could you live without? A baby food maker - I'm just going to use the appliances I already have.
Are you doing purées or BLW? We're starting with purees. I'm interested in BLW, but I think it makes DH nervous, so we'll probably do a mix after a couple of weeks.
Skipping rice cereal? We skipped it and started with banana mixed with breast milk. She seemed to like it!
What type of high chair did you get? OXO sprout
Anything else feeding related? Not that I can think of!

Ok so I gave him some avocado today.
He gags quietly....or is this choking? It's scary!

thanks for starting this thread!

LO will be 5 months next week; he can't sit up on his own yet but loves putting things in his mouth.

All of this information is very helpful :)

Have you started preparing?
WE're already in the thick of it. :-)

What is your must have gear?
Wet paper towels and a baby wearing only a diaper.

What could you live without?
At the moment, bibs, but that's because we strip her down before we feed her and give her a bath afterwards.

Are you doing purées or BLW?
Mostly puree, but some BLW.

Skipping rice cereal?
I have put it in some of her homemade food, as a filler. I don't feed her just the cereal by itself though.

What type of high chair did you get?
We were given a space-saving high chair and it's lovely! It sits on any regular chair.

Anything else feeding related?
We've been making our own food. She loves chicken, mango, apple, and sweet potato. She's okay with carrots and squash. LO doesn't like peaches at all.

LO is 5 months on Sunday so we're still a month away, but I just started doing some research on solids this week!

Have you started preparing? I'm just reading and pinning gear I might want to buy. We didn't register for any feeding gear except for the high chair.

What is your must have gear/What could you live without? Not sure yet!

Are you doing purées or BLW? Leaning more toward purees right now.

Skipping rice cereal? Haven't decided yet. I might make my own brown rice cereal.

What type of high chair did you get? Graco Blossom

Anything else feeding related? We use cloth diapers and I'm apprehensive about the poo situation! I think we'll have to get one of those diaper sprayers.

@rawrasaur: so cute!

We got the part to our high chair tonight, so we decided to give him some prune puree.
He's on prune juice for his constipation anyway so knew he didnt have allergies.
I just loaded up the spoon and let him have at it! He had fun.
Don't really plan on giving him a whole lot until 6 months though....

I am reluctant to post pictures since this isn't gold - but I posted pics on instagram!
