We're still TTC...

This is my 5th cycle off BC but only the 3rd cycle where timing has been "right" with O.

When my dr determined I wasn't ovulating I went on Clomid. It was long after I wanted to start on it though.

I went off the pill, and never got a period. Then I did two rounds of progesterone to try to kickstart my cycle, but after each one I still didn't go back to normal cycling. I also had a family history of infertility after age 30, and I was 26 at this point. My doctor suggested at that point (about 4 months after we'd started trying to conceive and get my period straightened out) that I consider clomid. I did, it worked, and I conceived on my fourth round.

I'm very glad that I didn't wait. I had no intention of messing around for a year when I already had irregular periods, already had a family history. Clomid was not wonderful, but it wasn't terrible. And it got me my beautiful daughter. We've been NTNP now unsuccessfully for the past year, so it seems pretty clear that I just need help with my fertility in general.

If you don't want to wait, I wouldn't. You can certainly find a doctor who will support your timeline. There is very little benefit to 'being patient', in my opinion. Clomid has only minor side effects, the chance of twins aside. Had I been past 30 I would have had even fewer qualms.

About monitoring - all my cycles were unmonitored. I had progesterone testing CD21 to confirm ovulation, but that was it. I felt comfortable with that. I personally think that unmonitored clomid cycling for the first three cycles is ideal, but that's my comfort level.

I'm "only" on my third cycle of trying, and I think I ovulated 2 weeks ago so I'm just waiting a few more days to either get my period or test. If it's another BFN, I'm willing to try Clomid after one more 'natural' cycle. But I say "only" 3 cycles, because I've only ovulated 3 times since last September and am on CD98 right now. It would appear I need help ovulating sooner and I'm losing patience just waiting and waiting for it to naturally happen. I'm also almost 34.

@MerryC: My mom took five years or so to get pregnant with her first. I always thought I would take a longer time just based on her story, but also thought I would be younger when I started TTC and would have that kind of time.

@MrsCB: I shouldn't have said she would have sent me out the door with Clomid.....they would do a follow up to check for ovarian enlargement and a blood test to check for progesterone levels.

@SwedishFish: He has been tested, and thankfully all is well there. I have a family history of endometriosis, and that's an unknown for me right now.

@MrsMate: It's refreshing to hear that your doctor got the whip cracking due to age. I feel like there's really mixed messages on this. On one hand, they sent literature home with me about age and fertility, but on the other hand, the doctor was saying that we should just keep trying and come back at the end of one year.

I called my ob bc after 4 cycles of ttc we didn't have any luck. I never got positive opk's, and my cycles were becoming longer and irregular. Bloodwork was inconclusive on whether or not I was ovulating. So we started at 100mg clomid. We got pregnant the 1st cycle but it ended in mc. The next 5 cycles failed.

Because of your age (I saw my re for the first time at 33 and she said "we have no time to waste") I'd say it couldn't hurt to try the clomid but maybe not let it go all the way to 6 cycles.

Personally, I wouldn't do an unmonitored Clomid cycle. Back when I was first having trouble, of course that's exactly what I wanted - someone to just give me an rx for it and send me on my way. But it was so useful having the monitoring. But then, I didn't ovulate without it, so it's a little bit of a different story.

But with the monitoring they can tell you how many follicles, what size, etc. You'll also know better when you're going to ovulate, as opposed to trying to interpret OPKs. You could also do what I did, and do an ovulation trigger injection, which was awesome. I couldn't even feel it go in, and it makes you ovulate all mature follicles within 48 hours. So timing BD-ing was incredibly easy.

@Happygal: I'm a teacher and due June 17 so our timing worked out perfectly (though unintentionally) due to IVF. I was wary of doing unmonitored cycles on Clomid because I've heard there is supposedly a limit of the number of times you should take Clomid in your life. Has your DH been tested? Even if he has and everything's OK, maybe consider doing an IUI with the Clomid. I was so nervous but my IUIs were no big deal!

I didn't take any meds without monitoring because I wanted to be confident they were doing something, and that our risk of h.o. multiples wasn't great. So we waited until after a year, partly because my mom told me it took about a year for her to get pg with me, and partly bc as anxious as we were, we just weren't ready for that much intervention before a year.

Ah, I love this group. I have the "I'm not pregnant blues," and these responses already make me feel better.

@SwedishFish: I talked to her about this, asking what it meant to have a stronger ovulation. She said that it just means I'll release more than one egg, upping the chances that one gets fertilized.

@Mrs. TicTacToe: As a former teacher, I so understand the timing issue! I have a friend who works in the school and she's due that last week of school. Perfect timing.

@JMarionSmith: I think if I presented that to my RE as what I wanted to do, she'd be fine with it! It's hard to figure out how to decide the next steps.

well i didn't ovulate on my own, so clomid was the first step for us (unfortunately we had to add other meds later on.)

if you're ovulating on your own could you do a few monitored cycles and maybe an iui?

For my job, timing pregnancy can mean an additional 2 months of maternity leave (I'm a teacher, so if I have the baby 2-3 months before summer, I get all that extra time). We started trying when the timing would be right, but it didn't happen and after about 6 months my doctor said I could start clomid, but we decided to wait until the timing would be perfect again, which was another 6 months. I think you should just do what feels right to you. If you're not ready to try the clomid, then wait until you are. If that's next month, so be it!

Clomid can make your ovulation "stronger". I would ask the doctor for an opinion on why he/she thinks Clomid will help you. I used Clomid for an IUI cycle because I did not ovulate on my own.

For those of you have used Clomid, when did you decide to try it out while TTC?

We did NTNP for a few months, and have actively tried for 8 months now. We ran through all the tests and everything is fine, but the doctor was still willing to send me out the door with Clomid (and more) if I wanted to do so.

Part of me knows it can just take awhile and I should be patient, while the worn-out side of me wants to take the Clomid already! Wanting to start a family was a main motivator for getting married, and at age 34, I do feel that time is a factor.

I'd love to hear how those of you who decided to use Clomid went about making that decision. My doctor has really not provided much guidance in this area.
