@Alba4: I agree with you. I think you’ll get way more use out of a deck since it’ll be right off the kitchen.

FWIW, we have both, and our deck is used all the time (directly off the kitchen), but our patio is never used. Our house is built into a hill, so the patio is a level below the deck. It’s just easier to use the deck.

I usually prefer a patio (we just replaced our deck with a patio.) In your case, I think it would be better to have a deck since you have a raised ranch. Do you want to have to walk down a flight of stairs to eat in your patio? Wouldn’t you rather walk out a slider into a deck?

Thanks for the feedback, ladies! DH is very anti-patio for some reason, probably because resurfacing what we have is easier. Maybe I can change his mind with this informal internet poll!

We have a deck and I love it, so I voted deck. But it's made out of trex material so the maintenance isn't bad. We haven't had to do anything but power-wash occasionally (though we've only lived here for two years).

I vote patio but it would also depend on how many stairs and how close it is to the kitchen. If it's right off the kitchen and a decent amount of stairs, I'd keep a deck so the grill is close. If it's either further from the kitchen or still close to the kitchen and only a couple of steps patio wins out. Patios also seem better for fire pits and upkeep is easier. (I have stamped concrete and 2 steps down to my grill as a reference).

Definitely patio. I do not want the upkeep of a deck.

I would say more yard space and patio. The patio is also a bonus to me because it’s less upkeep than a deck!

Hoping to get some input from the hive. We currently live in a raised ranch on a small village lot in an area where lots of people live on acreage and like elbow room. We’re planning to sell sometime in the next two years and need to replace our current deck. We can’t decide if we want to tear it down to replace with a nice set of stairs and patio at ground level, which we think would make the yard look a lot bigger but may be less appealing than a deck, or resurface the existing structure, which is cheaper/easier, but breaks our small back yard into four smaller spaces (each side of the deck, in front of the deck and the deck) and one whole side of the yard never gets used.

If you were buying would you want a bigger feeling yard with a patio or a smaller feeling yard with a resurfaced deck?
