Our go to trick is to usually drag them into a steamy shower before bed, Motrin, and have the humidifier on in the bedroom.

We use benadryl at night and it works great. It helps them stay asleep if they have a cough, dries up mucus, and i swear it has prevented a whole bunch of ear infections (which we are highly prone to).

Thanks, all! The LNP at our pediatrician called and recommended Benadryl at night, but nothing else. Will give it a try tonight. Also have a call in to my SIL (who is a pharmacist) to ask about the dosing on Dimetapp - and protocol for giving it to kids at the hospital she works in.

We just had a nasty cold at our house. DS is also 2.5. No otc cough syrups per my pediatrician. They did recommend a tablespoon of honey for cough and it did help! (Which I hear is basically what the Zarbees syrup is)

We use the hylands night time cold and cough for bed and it helps for sleep. But like mentioned above for severe decongestion, our pediatrician gave us dimeatapp dosage for DD when she was around that age. It worked immediately.

We've used Zarbee's as well, but unfortunately, there isn't a ton you can do. J&J makes a vapor bath that you can try (usually at least makes my LOs' noses run to get it all out). Try sucking out the snot with either the nose frieda or the sucker bulb. I then run the shower while we're giving them a bath so they can breathe in the steam, and then I put baby vicks vapor rub on their feet and put socks on or put them in footies. It ironically helps with the cough. We also have a warm mist humidifier with the vicks vap-o-pads running all night too.

Lots of luck and hope she feels better!

When my son was 3, he got RSV and was miserable. The Dr at the peds urgent care gave us dosing for Dimetapp and we've used that when he's had a nasty cough. It definitely seems to help him.

We are dealing with this right now too. It's so sad. DD is 3. we are doing hylands during the day and benedryl over night but honestly it's not helping much. Last night she coughed from 12-330 almost non stop

Ironically we have her 3 yr apt today so I will be asking if there is anything else we can do.... it's killing me seeing her so yukky and it's also killing my sleep. I was nodding off at work yesterday

We have had some luck wth hylands nighttime cold and cough- but it very well could be placebo and sugar water in a medicine cup would work just as well.

We also tried Benadryl, at the suggestion of my pediatrician. But she was getting tons of ear infections and we were trying to dry up the fluid in her ears.

Lo is 2.5 too and we recently took her to the dr (I thought she might have an ear or sinus infection--she kept saying her nose hurt poor thing) and were told that there's not really any otc decongestants for kiddos under 4 :bummed: There are homeopathic cough syrups though, like we've used Hylands and it sort of helps? I've used Zarbees for myself while pregnant and thought it made me feel better, I think there's a child version too.

Is there any suitable decongestant for a 2.5 year old with a nasty cough/stuffy nose? Poor thing is congested and miserable, but I'm pretty sure it's just a cold. I'd love to try something at home before I drag her (and her newborn sister, and her big sister.....) into the sick portion of the pediatrician.
