@snowjewelz: I didn't either! He banged his chin into the dining table and I guess that's how it happened. But he's doing MUCH better!!! He woke up Sunday morning yelling "Dada! My tongue doesn't hurt anymore!!" It still looked kind of bad, but much better than Saturday night. I'm relieved that tongues heal so quickly!!

@Adira: Hope Xander's doing better! I had no idea one can cut their tongue so deep with just teeth!

This literally happened to J on Thursday. He was with the nanny and she got the bleeding to stop and calmed him down. He was pretty cranky that night and didn't want to eat and wouldn't suck his thumb (which is how he self-soothes), but nursed just fine. It was a TERRIBLE night, he finally went back to sleep after giving him some Ibuprofen. He's seemed fine since yesterday morning and is eating and sucking his thumb like usual yesterday and today. Still looks pretty bad but hasn't bleed since the incident. I just keep checking him for temperature or if his tongue is swollen, so far so good

Charlie has literally gouged out the bottom of his tongue from biting it when we was younger and the Drs at the hospital never did more than look at it and shave a tooth down. It looked terrible healing, but it is fine now. Hope Xander is doing ok and it doesn't hurt him much more! I may just be careful about what I feed him (nothing acidic for example) to prevent it hurting more.

@DesertDreams88: Oh, maybe! So it might be too late to get stitches now anyway.

I don't know if it's the same for tongues vs. skin, but I know that there's something like a 6 hour time frame on getting stitches... at least that's what the urgent care doctor told us when DH delayed getting stitches. Something about the infection risk increasing.

He bit his tongue and had a flap. We went to the ER, but at his age (8 months), getting stitches wasn't worth it. He would have to be anesthetized to get one stitch. It healed within a couple of days.

DS cut his tongue BAD last summer - fell in the shower and bit it really deep. He had trouble with certain foods for about 24 hours, but then seemed ok. It looked awful though. I texted a pic to a family friend who's an oral surgeon and he said while they can stitch the tongue they usually prefer not to and to just let it heal on its own. After a few days, you couldn't even see it anymore.

@Torchwood: He's only three, so he hasn't mastered swishing things and spitting it out, unfortunately! But that's good to know there is a mouthwash for something like this!

Not sure exactly how old he is, so not sure if it'd work, but when DH cut his tongue badly they had him use a special mouthwash (from Walgreens) to reduce the risk of infection. Mouths are pretty gross.

DD cut her tongue pretty bad last year. It was bleeding a lot and freaked me out. I called Telecare who told me that unless it was super super severe (ie almost falling off) that the Er Doctor would do very little and it would heal by itself.

So we applied pressure to get the bleeding to stop, gave her some frozen things to help with the pain and also some Tylenol. The next morning she woke up and it looked much much better ...the nurse was right, it did heal very quickly

@deerylou: Thanks. I was actually wondering if it would need stitches since it seems so deep. Hopefully he doesn't hurt it again while he's sleeping, and I'll call in the morning when out office opens!

I had to get a few stitches in my tongue as a toddler due to quite a deep bite. Wounds in the mouth heal more rapidly, but I might get it looked at just in case. May need a stitch or two.

Xander cut his tongue earlier today (with his teeth). It bled for a little bit, but it didn't seem to bleed excessively. He's been complaining about it all night and I finally got a good look at it and it's really deep!!! Like it kind of looks like the cut is half-way through his tongue! I don't think it's still bleeding (or if it is, it's bleeding very lightly), but is there something I should be doing about it???

He's going to bed now, but I'll call the pediatrician in the morning if it's still causing him any more pain or if it looks worse. Anyone else's LO experience something like this (or yourself)? Any advice?
