@MsLipGloss: yep, gov't so it is probably a bit different. A lot of women say they came here from private practice to start a family. It is still competitive no doubt, but my concern would be not making the next grade or progress with my assignments. But we arent looking to start trying until after performance reviews ;)

We put it off for a long time (for a cross country move), and I feel like now is the perfect time (I'm currently pregnant). BUT, I'm not sure I would have put it off for work ... A job can be temporary.

I'm very much in the "you never know what could happen, so do everything you WANT to do now" camp, and I would encourage you two to go with your hearts. You might need a few months of trying before you get pregnant, and in the end, I'm sure it'll all work out as it's supposed to! :)

@dc yoga bee: @MrsMcD: @Mrs. Jacks: Ideally? 3 years . . . that is just enough time to wear off the new attorney smell and to have earned a little street cred with your firm. And, not to be a downer, but just because *nobody batted an eye* doesn't mean that the pregnancy won't have any negative impact on that attorney's career. It is a brutal, competitive environment . . . you will do well to remember that (be shrewd and never get too comfortable)!

ETA: Ah, I see you are not in private practice.

I totally understand waiting for work -- when we decided to TTC, we waited 2 extra months so that I wouldn't be on mat leave for our large gala (I am a fundraiser). I get it for a few months here or there.

That being said, there's never a good time to have a baby - just some that are a little better than others. It sounds like your workplace is pretty supportive of pregnancies, and let's be real - when you hire a married woman in her 20's, you can't be totally shocked when she gets pregnant, right??

Your health concerns are scary, and I'm not sure I'd chance waiting 3-4 more years. Plus, it seems to be taking so many people a lot longer to get pregnant these days.

So there's my totally unhelpful and not super making sense answer!

I'm in the go for it camp! Agree there is just never a perfect time and things will always come up. We TTC'd #1 when hubs was unemployed and just figured it would all work out (which it did and I'm glad we went for it). Given the health issues you mentioned it sounds like TTC is the priority. I do think it can impact your career, but to me family is more important at this stage and many things can be covered at work with advance notice. I'm not in law though so don't have that perspective.

I was faced with the same feelings when DH and I started to TTC. We were just like you guys where it just CLICKED and it was all we talked about and wanted. We talked about money and careers, how it would all work.. but in the end we decided that like many other have stated, there is no perfect time.

It seems like your job would be supportive, which is awesome. The details always seem big when you're getting perspective too!

Update:

My supervisor has added me to an additional practice group and is,sending me to training as I didn't study this in law school. So at first I immediately thought well there's your answer! But another attorney that started the same week as me and is a first year attorney as well just announced, she is pregnant and is involved in a major major litigation and will be out when it goes to trial. No one batted an eyelid and everyone is really excited! It makes me wonder how much longer i want to delay!

@looch: i'm really sorry to hear that. :(

Couple of additional pieces of information. I'm gov't and on the permanent GS scale, so I won't lose my job or anything. Buying a house is very important but when 600K gets you a condo,we are forced to continue to save so that we can get the single family for 800-900K or move to another city. Which we don't want to,do so we rent! My family has a heart condition where every female over 30 has either died or the child died, so while I'm only 26, not chancing it and waiting 3-4 more years to get started and we want more than one god willing. The most recent death was April 2013, so still pretty serious. I workout and do all i can to keep my heart healthy, but childbearing is rough on anyone, and especially my family. So waiting a couple more years isnt an option. I'm already advancing quickly, so I'd like to think I've been proving my worth so far. Actually attending the conference won't hurt my development, i would just worry because I'm a worrier!

What year are we in? 2013? I seriously had to think about it!

I don't know, there is never a right time for anyting in life, you kind of just have to go with it and do it. I mean, so much can happen in a year, I don't want to be the bearer of sadness in this thread, but I have two people in my immediate circle that lost their spouses before they were 35.

It is not an easy decision and sometimes, while we plan all we can, this doesn't come with guarantees.

On one hand, I completely understand why you want to wait. On the other hand, there will ALWAYS be something coming up that makes any potential due date inconvenient. We put off TTC for quite awhile, not solely because of work, but it was definitely one of the factors -- first, I wanted to be at my job long enough to qualify for FMLA, then we ended up moving for DH's job and I wanted to give the new job at least a year, plus there were other life events like buying a house and getting settled in, and then about the time we were ready, I got saddled with a huge case...but we decided to go ahead anyway and let the chips fall where they may. Fortunately, the case (sort of) wound up already so with a bit of luck nothing will come back to us during my leave, but I just had to trust that things would be okay. I do work for the government, so there's a little less pressure than there would be in private practice, but even so the timing is never going to be ideal. I think the idea of taking a hiatus during the "crucial" months but keeping to your original plan otherwise is a good one, but you know your situation best!

Depending on your age, I would wait to start TTC. Your first few years as a lawyer are so hard and so important as far as learning the practice and establishing your worth. I could barely even breathe during my first three years, let alone think of TTC! You must be rocking it as a first year! But seriously... I don't know if there is ever a perfect time to start TTC. You are always (hopefully) going to have a big case, trial, partnership, etc on your plate. FWIW, it was important for me to buy a place before I did anything else in my adult life. If you can do it, do it.

Personally, dh and I waited an extra year to start ttc because of my career trajectory (I'm getting a phd so I waited until I was all my requirements besides from the dissertation were done and a large chunk of y research will be done by our due date). But it depends-- is attending this conference really important to you professionally and personally, or is it that you'd be worried about what people/boss thinks? If you think it will hinder your professional development in th e long term and that takes a higher priority for you, then I'd wait. But if you're ready sooner and thats what you really want I'd go for it.

@Mrs. Jacks: Le sigh. I know :( Even though it may not "work," Jan-July are the best times to have a baby for our fiscal year and big projects. It's just that the hubs and I have been doing all the fun couple stuff (travel, we play tennis on a whim, go to beer festivals, out to eat with friends, etc). Not saying we're taking it for granted at all though. I guess we'll just have to keep on keepin on for another 8-9 months!?!

I would wait, personally. I waited through residency and fellowship before ttc and I'm glad I achieved that big stuff... Now if you kept delaying for work projects, that would be a problem.

I feel like with medicine and law there is a lot of career planning that goes into having a baby, because we invest so much money and time into developing our careers. It requires some thought to the strategy, you know?

Thanks for the advice! December/January is the earliest we can start. I go on site with a new client next month, and don't want to be pregnant the very next month if that makes sense. I'd like to be with the new client for 3 months (Oct-Dec), and then start trying so the earliest I would need to announce would be 6 months into this new client's account.

What a tricky decision! I have a pretty low stress career as a nanny so I really can't speak to that side of things. I do think though that life is full of so many variables that I would rather try on the sooner end of the spectrum. I think perfect timing is a bit of a myth and no matter what there will always be some reason that pops up.

Can you start TTCing sooner? That way maybe your hubs and baby can travel along with you for the big conference.

Plus, just because you start TTC in Jan, doesn't mean you will get pregnant then. If you don't conceive until March or April, then you're in the "ok to fly" window still of your pregnancy in October/November. Even if you put off TTCing for just 2 months (instead of making him wait til summer), it can work out.

Would you delay starting ttc for work? Initially, DH and I were pretty easy going about when we wanted to start, and I toyed with the idea of maybe November, to give me 3 full months in my new role at work. That was over the summer. Now, all the sudden, it's like we are totally ready. We are still saving for a house (darn you DC market), but we are ready to start a family. My DH talks about having a baby almost every day. I've been working out like crazy to lose the 20lbs I gained studying the bar, and it's like my focus has shifted. No longer am I working out for vanity reasons (of course health too), but I want to get my body in the best shape I can to carry another human being. We talk about our parenting styles, how we feel about this or that, and we are soo ready to parent. The problem....

I've just been made 1st chair on planning a huge conference in October/November 2014 (no exact date yet). This kind of cramps my ttc plans! The conference will not be in DC, and I would definitely need to fly. I won't be speaking at the conference at all, just working on any/all legal issues, and then I attend as an observer/ on site in case a crazy legal question were to come up. Do I delay ttc until next summer so I would still be able to travel come October/November? Do we go ahead and start trying as planned in December/January? Other? What would YOU do!?! I don't know if it would "look bad" that I didn't actually attend the conference if we were lucky enough to get pregnant soon. I obviously will have already done all the legal grunt work from now-next September. But, would I disappoint my employer? This is my first job out of law school, so I don't know how these things work. *For background, my one year work anniversary is in January (when we would be planning to start). When I told DH we may need to wait until next summer, he was heartbroken :(

Thanks for listening and any and all advice!
