My hospital and OB don't do donations so we weren't able to donate :( Also both my boys were born on weekend hours.

We had jaundice with our first with delayed clamping, and I wasn't about to increase the risks of that again so we didn't do either the second time.

I was contacted by someone from the cryobank today and got the forms. They will take donations from any hospital with a Joint Commissions accreditation and you need your OB/midwife to agree to do the collection - the hospital doesn't need to be a special collection site. As posters have mentioned, they won't accept collections for births between Friday and Sunday afternoon because they send a courier out to collect the cord blood the next business day. And I need to return my signed forms by the end of 34 weeks.

we delayed cord clamping. I wanted to donate the cord blood too but honestly I didn't take the time to research it/get organized about it, and baby was born a little early. the only cord banking that my ob discussed with me and that I saw fliers around the offices for was private and we weren't interested in that.

We did delayed clamping. LO needed some work done after he was born, but they did it all while he was on my chest. I don't think donation is an option at our hospital.

Donate! We banked ours because my husband had strong feelings about it, but also intended to do a minimally delayed clamping. DD was born so quickly that we didn't get a chance to communicate the clamping delay but in retrospect I am very glad. DD was hospitalized for 24 hours a few days after birth due to jaundice, and delayed cord clamping would have increased the severity of the jaundice.

@junebugmama: Same. It just didn't convince me, especially since our hospital wasn't a collection site and we would have had to pay a decent amount of money to donate. Just wasn't worth it.

We had planned to do delayed clamping, but D wasn't breathing at birth, so he had to be cut and taken away right away. :bummed:

We did both! It was exactly what @anandam said -- even after delayed clamping, there is often plenty of blood left to donate. My midwives were very supportive of delayed clamping, basically what they said was "make sure your own baby gets the benefits first, and then let us worry about whether there's enough left to donate." Fortunately, it worked out!

Both our midwives and all the banks we asked said they're not mutually exclusive, so I think in many cases you can do both. They said the quantity of blood needed for banking is small compared to the total tranfused to baby through the cord, so it can e collected after. If our hospital were a site for the public bank we'd do that, but it's not. Still haven't decided whether to pay for private banking. In any case, our plan was to prioritize delayed clamping because there is a near certain benefit, then get what blood is left for the theoretical/potential benefit of banking.

@Arden: It does look like the real deal, doesn't it? If there was distress, meconium or severe bleeding, I 'd skip it... but I do think in a regular healthy birth, more OBs are doing it...

Another vote for donating! We were planning on donating but did end up banking, as it was a gift from (and insisted on by) my grandparents. I did a lot of research and agree with @Mrs. Jacks: that the banked blood often isn't helpful to the child it came from, but rather siblings and in some small percentages, parents. Even after the offer of banking as a gift, we were still torn about it and wanted to donate.
Also, I do think you can still donate if you want to delay the clamping.

Cord donation for me. We donated, though I dont know if it was ever used. Cord banking is not that useful to the individual it's banked for, because if you need those cells it generally means there is something wrong wih the ones you already have. In other words there is some kind of mutation that makes the cells unusable.
