@Foodnerd81: Listeria is caused by bacteria found in water and soil. You can get listeria from uncooked meats, uncooked veggies, unpasteurized milk/milk products, and any processed foods.

Deli meat is typically a no-go during pregnancy because contamination can occur after cooking but before packaging - it's a processed food. Deli cheese is pasteurized, and therefore is safe to eat.

Here's a link for more info :-) http://americanpregnancy.org/pregnancy-complications/listeria/

@getjazzy: I know the two stores I go to have different slicers. But I'm wondering if the same contamination issue is there on either slicer. But then I start thinking, or those cracker sliced blocks ok then? Then why would any block be ok? So probably I should just ask my midwife next week :) Not terribly worried, more curious than anything.

But to be more on topic.. I didn't even think of the deli sliced cheese thing. I don't know that I've ever bought it that way. On second thought, I'm not even sure if you can buy it that way here? I would absolutely think they have a different slicer though for cheese. First off, many people are veggie/kosher and sharing a slicer wouldn't fly and second, I'm sure people don't want their cheese tasting like random meats. I'd say you're fine.

For meats, cheeses, or both?

I feel like it's sort of a silly rule since all the listeria outbreaks you hear of are from things like cantaloupe and spinach, but I try to be careful just in case. So I microwave my stupid turkey breast. But wasn't sure if I'm supposed to melt my cheese too.

If you follow the no deli meats unless it's heated to steaming rule, are you "allowed" to eat cheese that was sliced at the deli? Most delis have a separate slicer but I imagine the (small) contamination risk is the same?

And packaged deli meats are still a no go, right, not just fresh sliced cold cuts?
