I worked up until my due date, and he came 10 days later, after 3 days of labor and they broke my water. Needless to say, wasn't worried about either.

Speaking from experience :silly: if I were to have more children, which I probably will not because of what happened to me...I would probably still work up to my due date. I went 40 weeks with LO1, and 37 I think weigh lo2. It wouldn't have mattered if I was 5 minutes from a hospital (which I was def less than 10) I might not have made it anyway and I'm not sure I would want to take my baby days when I don't have a baby yet.

If I had a long commute or was far away from a hospital I would be probably just be like sign me up for a home birth (which is totally not my style personally at all).

I wasn't concerned about either. You'd have to have a super fast labor to deliver on the roadside and water breaking at work really wouldn't be that big of a deal to me.

Company policy was for women to start their mat leave two weeks before their due date, so I knew there wasn't much risk of my water breaking there. But I did get stuck in traffic on a bridge a few days before my due date and started having contractions. I started going through all my options if it actually was labor- traffic was literally not moving. I decided I would call 911 and have a police escort to the hospital or have the cops drive me and leave the car in the breakdown lane. :) false alarm but I liked having a plan.

As it was Labor started early on a Sunday morning, two days before due date, and my water broke in the hospital less than two hours before she was born.

Work is closer to the hospital, so having it happen there would have been okay. With J, my water bag stuck out slightly interfering with cervical checks during labor. I pushed some of it out on the way to the hospital.

Water breaking. My hospital is literally 20 minutes from anywhere I would be so the chances are slim for delivering on the side of the road!

@lawbee11: def thought the same and had the same choice in mind!

My boss last time I was pregnant was afraid of my water breaking at work and insisted I work from home from 35 weeks on! :P

I have a flex schedule now, so I'll probably do the same this time too!

My office was actually closer to the hospital than my house so delivering on the side of the road certainly wasn't a risk. And I wasn't really worried about my water breaking at work... Only something like 11% of women have labor start with their water breaking. As it turned out I went into labor at 9:30pm and just texted work to let them know I wouldn't be back. Ha!

My husband did try to tell me that if I went into labor at the office I had to wait for him to come get me because he didn't want anyone else taking me to the hospital.

@bluestriped bee: Yup- I felt weird about work knowing I was in labor before anyone else, since my contractions started in the middle of the night, so I just... wasn't on my morning calls. I didn't call to let family know I was in labor because by the time it was a decent hour to call, I was deep in active labor. My BIL (who works for the same company) found out first that the baby was coming because my teammates said something to him! Anyway, I was in labor for 14 hours at home before ever going into the hospital... and it 22 hours total from start to finish. And I think that's about average/ on the short side?

No, I'm not concerned about my water breaking at work. Maybe I should be, but a) I work with a lot of women, and b) I had to have my water broken at 9cm last time. Not that this time will be the same, but it's what I have to go on.

I worked from home the last week and a half, but not because I was worried- more because the commute was too difficult when I felt like I had an infant skull so low in my pelvis- it was just too difficult to walk! Most labors aren't that fast, so you would have plenty of time to get home. And I think only 10 or 15% of labors start with the water breaking--- mine didn't break until less than an hour before he was born! Plus, the majority of labors start at nighttime, so you're more likely to be home anyway....

I'd rather have my water break at work. In fact, my water broke when we were at a restaurant with DD1 :-) I'd rather have that happen than have to deliver without drugs or a medical professional around.

I worked past my due date and I was never worried about delivering on the side of the road. It would have had to be an unrealistically short labor. After my due date passed I did vaguely worry about my water breaking at work but at that point I was already bringing a hospital bag with me so I would have had a change of clothes if need be. I did start contractions at work but wasn't in active labor until the next morning and my water never broke.

I think I would rather have my water break at work! Embarrassing, yes, but at least I would be surrounded by kind coworkers instead of alone in my car. Also my commute was horrendous and LA traffic is so unpredictable and horrible that I would probably go into a full blown panic attack if it happened in the car!

My coworker took her mat leave early so she doesn't have to worry about delivering on the side of the road. (She has a 1.5 hr commute).
