@coopsmama: I definitely agree with you, I have no reason to believe HRC is more concerned with "women's issues" just because she's a woman.

I perceive the issues more broadly too- which candidate would be more likely to send your children to war? To want to make children's college education more affordable? To stop corporate greed that would affect your family?

I think it's more a matter of who could get the job done. I don't see Bernie being able to work with congress well enough to get anything passed, no matter how great his ideas are. I think Clinton could, even though it wouldn't go as far as democrats would like.

I think both would be excellent champions of women's and children's (and ultimately, family) rights. I think HRC has an excellent track record of advocating for women, children and the less fortunate generally.

I don't think either has a hope in hell of getting the Republicans (congress and beyond) to stop attacking women's reproductive rights in every state and at the federal level, or to pass any sort of semi/paid or fully-paid leave. So, I'm not sure that either would make women's rights the forefront of their agenda, especially during a first term.

I think either one would do a great job re: women's issues. I actually think Bernie might do slightly better. I'm as feminist as they come and I support Bernie (though I'd obviously vote for Hillary over Trump or Cruz). Women's issues are YUGE for me and I won't vote for anyone who would defund PP (among other things).

I read this article the other day and found it interesting:

I'll preface this with the fact I've been a longtime HRC supporter - voted for her in 2008 over President Obama. I think both she and Sanders are good advocates on women's issues. I do think that Secretary Clinton has a stronger track record on this issue and has spoken more consistently about making it a major part of her presidency. So while I think their plans are similar, she more likely to make it a priority. Senator Sanders has other priorities it seems to me outside looking in. I admire them both greatly. Beyond just family leave, safe and legal abortion and contraception rights are particularly important to me as a social issue and I think they both understand the constitutional right and how it should be enforced. Certainly both are head and shoulders above the Republican candidates.

@Silva: oh man, I totally know what you mean that she will take a lot of heat for that sort of tone. I do like both candidates, and would be happy for either. But I support HRC right now. She is SO knowledgable about every single issue. So, so smart. Last night's debate I thought really showed that.

@winniebee: I am a Bernie supporter. I've voted for him and contributed to his campaign. I think he will work hard for human rights issues, and I consider parental leave and access to health care to be a part of that.

I would love to have a woman president, but HRC isn't my top choice for that position. I will say that one area I think Bernie supporters have overlooked is the simple fact that HRC has obviously had to work her ass off in ways that Bernie never has or will to get to where they are. There was an SNL skit about one of the debates early on where HRC just looked at him and said "it must be nice to just yell all the time." It was a subtle point, and one that isn't given enough credit. I like to think that HRC would do some yelling too, but people already call her a witch and the b-word. Can you imagine what they would do if she actually got really fired up and pissed?

I think they'd both be great on women's issues, but I think they both have higher things on their priority lists. Women issues might be slightly higher on Hillary's though.

I think either one will be a great President though. It's nice to have two options that I'll be almost equally happy about!

@coopsmama: yup, you're probably right! But I also think there's the extra element that HRC will be good overall for "women's issues" since she would be the first female president and therefore set an example/ set a path for girls in this country. For that reason, even if they are equal on their platform, that tips the scale for me on women's issues.

I think what I'd really like is for both of those candidates to get some good PR and marketing on this issue, because it's not JUST paid maternity leave; it's paid FAMILY leave, and it benefits every single American, not just people who have children.

Spouse has cancer and you need to take care of them? Paid family leave.

Parents are aging and you need to take care of them? paid family leave

Kid gets in a car wreck and you need to take care of them? Paid family leave

Have a baby? Paid family leave.

This isn't a women's issue--it's a human issue.

I actually thinks it's biased against Bernie (or any other man in his shoes) to think that just because HRC is a woman she would push those issues to the forefront more than he might. I haven't seen anything from her that makes me think she would, at any rate.

I didn't think HRC had come out with a clear proposal for what she would do for "women's" issues. And Bernie has said he would push for 12 weeks paid leave.
