I pay $30.58 per pay period (which makes it roughly $61 a month) for MetLife PDP dental for me, hubs and daughter. But it's been great because I haven't had to pay anything out of pocket to date and we all get our cleanings, checkups and for my 2.5 year old, her dentist breaks out the appointments into multiple shorter appointments because she's FUHREAKED out about cleanings. And still nothing out of pocket. Why do you pay out of pocket? Are the dentists in network?

@Bao: That's a ton! I thought ours was high and it's something like $20 a month for all of us. If you guys don't get a lot of dental work done, I'd drop it. I typically just go for my 2 yearly cleanings.

$65 is actually pretty reasonable considering the type of dental plan you have. Depending on what part of the country you live in and your type of plan $100 wouldn't even be that crazy for family coverage.

I would keep it. My LO needs an entire mouthful of work and ours only covers $1500 a year per person. So there's $1500 we won't have to pay off whatever her total comes out too. Being uninsured scares me!!

I would for sure keep it, the purposed of the insurance isn't for the cleanings, it's for when you need to get a filling (as I just did) or have a major dental emergency.

I recently broke a tooth (didn't realize if had left a tiny bone in the chicken chili I made...oops). I needed a partial crown and even though my insurance doesn't cover it in full, the difference was about twice what my annual premiums are. So I'd definitely keep insurance for the adults, you never know what might happen! I didn't add my LO yet, though, because our regular health insurance actually covers preventative care (cleanings) so I don't see the point until she's older. Although I guess she could do something to one of her teeth, too...I couldn't justify the added cost at this point, though. I may add her next year when she's 2.

We have had no cavities or anything for years, so I was putting away about $50 per month as if DH and I were going 2x a year and DD once a year for cash pricing including a set of X-rays a year. We just go coverage that will only cost us $30 pretax so we went for it.

@Cole: I think we will drop us though too...yeah? I did the math and without insurance if we all went in for out of pocket cleanings twice per year we are still saving a couple hundred. If we need anything major the dental doesn't even cover it all in full anyway. Now that I say all this we will all need a tooth pulled :silly:

I agree that sounds high, especially when you have such a high copay. I think I would consider risking not adding your lo to your plan in that case. We elected not to add our daughter basically until she is fifteen months. I will bring her in for a check up around one I think and just pay out of pocket.

Wow, that sounds like a lot. If both of you get your 2 yearly cleanings as recommended, and xrays are covered, I'd probably keep the insurance since it would come out about the same, and the insurance should cover other just in cases. I can't remember the break down, but my last visit was $360 for cleaning, 4 bite wings, and 3 other xrays. If you guys slack and don't get your cleanings, I wouldn't get the insurance, cause I haven't had any emergency dental visits that couldn't wait ever and would just add insurance the following year if I thought I needed fillings or anything more.

@Bao: wow- that does seem like a lot. I would call your dentist in the morning. I was deciding whether to add LO or just pay out of pocket, as well as decidingn which plan DH and I should get, and they gave me all the exact charges and codes I needed to compare. So just find out how much yours and dh's cleanings are and go from there.

I am looking at our dental plan though DH's work since it's open enrollment and I was going to add LO to our dental plan. With her included it's going to be $65 month. I had no idea we were paying as much as we were for just DH and I to have dental coverage. We still have to pay $50 every cleaning visit as a co-pay. I'm not sure how much visits cost without insurance but I was curious if you guys could help me figure out if $65 a month is worth it or not.
