Well I had a root canal done at 41 weeks pregnant so I say get it fixed! I would perhaps wait for another week or so till you hit the second tri but definitely get it sorted so it doesn’t get worse.

@graceandjoy: When I was like 6 or 7 weeks pregnant I had a temp crown break on me and had to get it replaced the next day. My OB gave her blessing and I had it done with Novocain, but she specifically did not want my dentist to use epinephrine, which slows blood flow down to basically hold the numbing agent in place so it doesn’t wear off as quickly. My dentist had to re-shoot me with numbing like 4x during the procedure which was not fun. But I didn’t have any other choice, and my baby was (and is) fine. ask about the epinephrine for sure. Good luck, you will both be okay :)

@graceandjoy: Just a note of caution that cod liver oil can contain higher amounts of the retinol form of vitamin A which is not recommended during pregnancy. It might be good for teeth sensitivity while not pregnant, but I would run this by your care provider first just in case. Friendly info from a recently pregnant lady who works in food science :)

@graceandjoy: I was just at the dentist two weeks ago because one of the wisdom was so painful. 36 weeks at the time and they were tempted to pull but I decided all 4 can go at the same time after baby is here. My dentist did xrays(double layered me) and also advised that the OB has to give authorization. I scheduled for the fall and have been rinsing with warm water and brushing very well in the back. Tylenol when needed. No pain- I know it’s not similar but maybe salt water rinse and keeping an eye on it.

@graceandjoy: yeah if you’re gagging then make sure you get CLO in a capsule and chase it down with something palatable, juice, coffee, because it’s pretty yucky.

I had a cavity filled early in my first pregnancy - xrays and novocaine were needed. Everything was fine and I was told by my midwife group to definitely take care of this as infections or further complications are far more dangerous than the minimal risk of dental work. Best of luck - hope you're comfortable soon and it's not too much they need to do!

I wanted to suggest two things while you’re waiting: oil pulling- you take a teaspoon of coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth, then spit out. Do this after you brush. The second is taking a cod liver oil supplement. I always remember to start up when I get teeth sensitivity and usually within a few days it improves.

Did you have to get anything done besides routine cleaning?

I had a pretty bad toothache over the weekend and worried that it might be infected (going to the dentist this week). I'm 11 weeks and my OB said wait if you can, but of course treat issues right away! She said both x-rays and numbing agents are okay (and said dentist can always reach her to re-confirm).

Just want to see if others have had more extensive dental issues that needed to be taken care of during pregnancy and how it all turned out!
