I just went yesterday and it was not bad at all! The shot is painless and the only part that grabs your attention is when they put the fluid in you feel a small like zing in your tongue it almost feels like a vibration or a tickle. You have nothing to worry about the dentist will tell you exactly what they are doing but as the others said do not look at the shot it looks terrifying but it does not hurt at all

Ask your dentist if they have ipods or ear plugs available (lots do these days). If they don't, bring your own if you can; it does help a lot to close your eyes and listen to music so you don't have to hear the dentist working on your teeth. As others have said, don't look at the needle; just close your eyes and open your mouth!!

I went through 8 years of being TERRIFIED of the dentist where I would cry and shake at just the thought of going. I finally bit the bullet and went and it was a piece.of.cake.

I insisted they use the numbing gel before I got the shots and felt NOTHING. It was awesome.
I'm not scared anymore and have been going consistently for the past 4 years.

It all depends on which part of the gum you will get the shot, if its the roof of your upper mouth then it really sucks but anywhere else is not too bad

@blackbird is right - this is what it looks like, but it's just so they can get a better hold on it. I think it hurts less than a vaccine, and they'll numb your gums before with topical stuff.

@sweetchic: don't worry, it's not so bad! I faint almost every time I get blood drawn, and I've even fainted after a flu shot once, but I've never ever fainted after getting Novocaine (and I've gotten it a lot!) Just close your eyes if needles make you nervous because it LOOKS very scary, but it's not bad at all, IMO.

It's the absolute worst part of the whole procedure. Once the shots are done, you'll be okay. My dentist will grab my cheek and shake it while he is inserting the needle. That helps get my mind off of it sort of....

I've had shots in my gums (cheek, inside gums, you name it!) and it does suck but it's not intolerable. It kicks in pretty quickly once it starts spreading. I get anxious right before but try to breathe and relax.. it's over before you know it! Sometimes my dentist will do it little by little over a couple minutes, so I'm not feeling most of the shots if he has to do a lot of areas.

I agree that it is the worst part but it is over super quickly, count to ten and it will be done. Numbing cream will help, also, take some ibuprofen before you go. Good luck!

It's not that bad. I think they hurt a lot less than a shot in the arm or tush.
I worked as a dental assistant for awhile, and I think they hurt less because it's super easy to give them. You don't have to shove, they just slip right in to the soft tissue in the mouth. They are tiny needles too.

So I am having some dental work done next week which will require numbing shots in each of the 4 quadrants of my mouth (gums and cheeks). I'm TERRIFIED of these shots, more than the actual dental work itself!! I think they put a topical numbing cream on first before the shots, but I'm still scared :(

Can anyone reassure me that it's not as bad as I think it's going to be?? *wahhh* I'm a big baby...
