Thanks everyone, your experiences are super helpful and putting me at ease.

I’m lucky to be very healthy with the exception of not so great teeth. ( I’m told it’s genetic but I recently cut out most sugary foods and it has helped some).

. I’m going to try to schedule the cleaning earlier than I had planned. Luckily I already had the X-rays needed....I feel so awkward discussing ttc with my dentist but the hygienist at my office is always asking about my son and when we are going to have another one so maybe I can start the discussion with her.

I would say regardless of what procedure you're even having done, get the dental work done. 1) you might be TTC for a long time and you don't want to delay oral issues ever and 2) you don't really want to do that stuff pregnant so best to get it over in case you do get pregnant quickly. I had deep cleanings both times I was pregnant and it was no biggie (I don't have any infections or issues tho) Good luck :-)

I had a root canal shortly before a BFP. I told the dentist that I was TTC. He used novacaine, which I believe is safe for pregnancy, but skipped the x-ray he would normally do.

I would get all dental work done ASAP if you’re TTC. Dental health is super important while pregnant and problems can exacerbate (bleeding gums etc). I had to get a crown while 25 weeks and I think my gums and teeth were way more sensitive afterwards because of the hormones. It was unavoidable but if you can get in for your cleaning and X-rays now, do it!

Also I did get X-rays and they doubled down on the heavy vest, didn’t seem concerned.

I had a deep cleaning my first Clomid cycle. I asked the dentist about it before I scheduled and he reassured me that everything was fairly localized and that good dental health was important during pregnancy. I wasn't pregnant that cycle but I'm glad I didn't delay either just in case.

With my 2nd LO, I had a problem with a crown right after I found out I was pregnant and the dentist refused to replace it. So I had to wait until after the baby was born. That said, they insisted I come in every 3 months for cleanings. But this was in Europe...so who knows.

FWIW (which is not much) I had laughing gas and novocaine when I was like 11dpo, tested the next morning and found out I was pregnant with our son, and freaked out. He is fine :)

During legit pregnancy my OB recommended waiting to the second tri if possible, but I think it's just a precaution. The dentist also can't give epinephrine, which is typically combined with the numbing agent and slows the flow of blood and helps keep the numbing agent working and in place. I had a dental emergency in March (my temporary crown broke and fell off and they had to put the real one on) and my dentist had to re-inject me with novocaine like 3 times because it wore off so quickly. (I am insanely sensitive to dental pain though.) My recommendation would be to get the appointment over with asap so you don't have to worry about it if you do get pregnant.

The usual recommendation is around 8 weeks of pregnancy or later. However, when it's as early as you're talking about, I honestly think the chances of it having an effect are nil. But your best bet is to call and ask.

I havd a dentist in the family and he works on pregnant women all the time. The only extra step he takes is to use an extra large apron to protect the uterus during x rays (of course the x rays are so small and focused it's not even really necessary, but yeah). Waiting to get dental care can be more dangerous because you could get a serious infection in your jaw, lose teeth, etc.

I had a couple cavities filled when about 6 weeks with DD and had novocaine for numbing. Before hand, I spoke with my provider and she very much encouraged me to have the procedures done and assured me there was less risk from the novocaine than there was benefit to having the work done.

I'm starting cycle 2 of TTC #2.

I'm scheduled to get a "deep cleaning" a few weeks from now (around cycle day 20....) so if we continue TTC this month I could possibly be PG by then.

I know I may need to get novocaine/shots for this cleaning. It's not something that I want to put off since I know it's important to have good dental health before getting pregnant. But I'm nervous about it affecting a possible pregnancy.

Should we wait out this month or go forward with TTC?? Has anyone gotten dental work while TTC or during early pregnancy?
