american dental association says age 3....so does MIL, who works for an orthodontist. E also likes having her teeth brushed, so it's not really a battle for us

@Tanjowen: Ha ha. We use the floss picks for kids.

http://www.dentek.com/products/view/fun-flossers-15/

He loves them and gives me no trouble because he thinks it's fun. We've generally been lucky that he hasn't given us much trouble in the tooth care department.

At out 2 year well visit, the pediatrician said it was time to take him. We have an appointment next week. He'll be about 29 months. We'll see how it goes. He just started getting really good about brushing his teeth the past couple of months. I still wonder if it's enough.

@Tanjowen: I asked my family dentist when LO was one and they said there was no reason to bring her before two. She is now three and has had two cleanings, but we chose just to pay out of pocket as it was cheaper than adding her to our dental. I think it was $79 for the cleaning.

We took DD right before she turned 2, she was already on our plan so we figured might as well use it. They used a fluoride supplement on her teeth. For me it was more about getting her comfortable going to the dentist, and having it become normal.

We won't be taking him until after 3. And even then, not sure the extra dental cost is worth the 1-2x annual OOP costs for his check-ups.

@BananaPancakes: Ummm, flossing? I haven't started on that one because just letting us brush his teeth is a major battle. Does your LO let you floss teeth willingly?

@MrsF: @MOMTOLITTLEB: @mediagirl: Kind of the age I was thinking too.

@Bubbles: @Anagram: Good points. I might call and see how much they charge for a single visit.

My mother in law is a dental hygienist and she said they don't usually go until 3 so we're waiting to add him to our insurance for awhile. She does check out his teeth all the time so that's nice. I would take him to a pediatric dentist if I had a concern.

I took LO at 12 months for an issue (major staining on her front teeth from iron drops that concerned me), and I had to pay out of pocket for a cleaning.

The doctor said it was cosmetic and not necessary and that I could wait until she was 2 and I had added her to insurance, but I just couldn't deal with two super stained, very visible front teeth for a whole year. So I paid $100 for an exam and a quick cleaning.

=) Might not hurt to have the insurance just in case of an issue. I have a friend with an LO the same age as mine, and her son has 2 extra teeth that came in before age 1 that caused major crowding and pain.

I took DS at 8 months because it's free here - the dentist had an extremely brief look at his teeth and gave me advice on caring for them. He said at this age it's more about just getting them used to the dentist

We took DS in a few months before he turned 2, but I had planned I taking him earlier since he had so many teeth so early on. Luckily we had been doing a good job of brushing and flossing, so there were no issues. The first visit was just the dentist counting his teeth and checking enamel. He did a little tarter scraping on the bottom front teeth since they tend to build it up there and brushed his teeth. I'm glad we went in when we did, just to be assured his teeth looked healthy and well spaced. His 2nd visit included a full cleaning and X-rays.

We just took M for the first time at 28 months because we just added her to our insurance. Even after 2 they just counted & brushed her teeth and painted them with a fluoride supplement. I don't regret not taking her before now.

We are signing up for new insurance and cannot decide whether to add LO onto the dental insurance coverage. Before age 2, is there really any reason to take them? I can't see them doing anything other than counting teeth and giving us pointers on cleaning them.

I planned to take him after age 2, but at 13 months he has 10 teeth and 3 molars in already, and his pediatric nurse at our last visit asked if we already have a pediatric dentist. So now I'm wondering if I should take him.

Anyone take their LO before age 2, and ifiled so, remember theprocedures and cost?
