I didn't have any side effects. After 5 years, my dr said I could stay on it only if I started taking calcium supplements.</p> <p>@crystbum: why did you or your dr suggest depo? I took depo because I was bad with daily BCPs. After I got off depo, I switched to the nuvaring. Put the ring in for 3 weeks the take off. It was HORRIBLE. I gained weight, was moody, ate constantly, and sex was the worst. There are so many potential side effects. I was lucky not to experience many of them, but what I did really affected my quality of life: decreased sex drive, lack of interest in sex, and depression. While depo wasn't too bad for me, several pills were. And if my worst side-effect-producing pill had been unstoppable (as the depo is for a little while), I would have been really upset. Is seeing a new doctor a possibility? I would be furious about getting bad information. That said, I actually do like my doctors and still find that I need to research things myself and occasionally raise concerns that he wasn't aware of (particularly about stuff related to nursing). I'm glad you have good LC support though, that is so critical. I also asked the nurses there if they had heard any reviews on the shot and of course they all said "no we haven't heard anything bad about it, its just like any other birth control." Then, I went back six weeks after I had started the shot and explained all the issues I was having and they wanted to put me on an estrogen pill to help even out the bleeding. I did ask again if that would have an effect on my milk supply and again they said no. Thankfully, I had a good support system with lactation consultants via the hospital I gave birth and they informed me that any other estrogen pill would bring my milk supply down even more and that the shot originally is not even recommended to be given postpartum because it does affect your milk supply a ton!! I've had a bad experience with birth control and it feels so frustrating and really brings home that the tiny fine print "some negative reactions may include..." is just not enough warning to make informed choices. Just know this will pass. I use a non-hormonal IUD which I like a lot. I miss some of the benefits of the BCP (clear skin, super predictable period, no pms) but feel so much better overall.</p> <p>Also, you are still in the postpartum period. It's possible some of this is related to pp hormones and breastfeeding hormones and not just the depo. I got my first shot and had AF for 3 months straight (not always heavy, but every single day). I was told at my next shot that that usually goes away after the second dose. Got my second shot and another 3 months of AF! Needless to say, I didn't go back for another ever again. </p> <p>I've had so many friends that never got AF, no side effects at all. It seemed so perfect.<br /> But no.<br /> This is also why I can't bring myself to try Mirena. It's so perfect for some many of my friends but I also know, personally, a handful of folks where it embedded or broke through the uterine wall.
