I was diagnosed with PPD, but it seemed to get worse when I started weaning (4 months). I did feel better after not having to stress about breastfeeding, but all my anxiety over that seemed to be transferred to other things, such as naps, etc. I didn't know until some of the conversations on HB recently that it was probably all interrelated!

@MerryC - We have this cupboard where all the bottles are kept. We had a bunch of different bottles from when LO wouldn't take one and we were trying all different kinds. Every time I would go to put bottles away they'd all fall out and tumble all over the floor. Last week I got so pissed off at them I just took all the ones we don't use and threw them in the trash. It felt so wasteful - like I should save them for our next baby - but also felt so good to just get rid of them!

I'm not full on weaning, but DD stopped nursing while teething. It lowered my supply, made me bleed/spot, gave me hot flashes, made my body odor super stinky, and made me irritable and needing more sleep. The mood swings have been unreal. I've been on a mad cleaning spree too! I want rid of all the extra crap in our house and want to live super minimalist now :)

I experienced the same thing. I went to my OB and was diagnosed with PPD. Apparently I just had a delayed onset until I weaned. The hormone swings you experience when weaning can be pretty extreme.

@meredithnyc - yeah thats the first time i'd heard of it too, and that was before I had LO. A friend of mine was also going through it at the same time. I've googled it a bit but there's not a ton of info about it.

The first time I heard about it was on this blog: http://joannagoddard.blogspot.com/2012/02/motherhood-depression-and-weaning.html

I haven't experienced it since nursing didn't work out for me and I only made it 2.5 months (and was supplementing the entire time), but hang in there and best of luck in getting past this.

I've heard that PPD can be an issue when weaning because of the hormonal ramifications. By stopping BFing, it alters your hormones.

Has anyone noticed an increase in depression, mood swings, irritability when weaning?

I've started trying to cut out a pumping session during the day and last week I was a crabby, weepy girl. I got super irritated at DH for little things. I cried twice in one week over nothing. I even went on a cleaning rage and tossed out a bunch of stuff that was taking up space in our cupboards and annoying me. I haven't felt this way since the early days with DD when I was first diagnosed with PPD. I've been reading it can happen with weaning. Makes sense, since the hormones are changing again. Just when you think you're through with it, it comes back again. I can't wait to feel normal again!
