Depression will bring on weight gain for many reasons. No motivation aka not as productive/moving around. A tendency to sleep more. All that fun jazz. Another factor is eating more comfort food or eating poorly in general. There are times where I'm depressed (I was diagnosed with manic depression) and I refuse to eat/not hungry.

Exercise helps a lot. It's hard to get motivated and go because who really wants to work out being upset? It does increase and release endorphins, helps you become more energized, and helps motivate. A lot easier said than done!

Of course it's different for everyone! I'm basing this off of what I've seen at work, dealt with in personal life, etc.

Depression definitely caused my weight gain in college. I had no motivation to get out of bed most days, which meant I wasn't exercising. I just ate the typical college student crap food, and gained quite a bit of weight over 4 years. Luckily my depression has abated to a very manageable level, and it helps me keep my weight down. But yes, it is a HUGE factor for me.

Sorry to hear about your rough year! I've heard it can cause weight gain...My BFF gained a lot of weight when she went through some tough times. She was holding it all in and her parents finally had her see a therapist to help her talk through and resolve issues. She lost 70lbs this yr!
I have another friend who lost a lot of weight when she went through a broken engagement...she went from 135 to 95 lbs and it was so scary! :-(

I haven't been depressed in forever, but! Back when I was in college, I used to say depression was the best diet. I never had an appetite when I was depressed and was skinny!

Do you feel like you gain weight more quickly/easily when you're down?

I just realized that I gained a bunch of weight since the beginning of the summer (like my summer clothes are too tight & we're going on vacation in a couple weeks, Opps!). I gained a bunch a while back during an illness and then had stayed put for a while, then put on a bunch pretty rapidly recently. I'll admit this year has been rough, a friend & my nana passed away, we are having difficulty TTC, trying to buy a home after a finding out a family member stole DH's ssn to take out credit for themselves & seriously limited our options and DH is pretty overworked & stressed lately, and those are just the tip of the iceberg. So I've been a little down. Maybe I don't pay attention to my eating when I'm down, but it doesn't seem like it's changed that drastically. Do you think just being depressed can cause you to gain weight? Now if only smiling could make my clothes fit!
