@Cherrybee: Hey, you're awesome too, mama. We are all awesome and we all have our struggles! Max, my 13-month old, is a very, very high strung little girl. Horrible colic as an infant, and then she mellowed out for a bit, at least I thought she did, but now she has discovered her will. Man, that will is strong! She screams not because anything is wrong, but simply because she doesn't want to sleep. She also throws herself on the ground and rolls around in these crazy tantrums.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: My hat goes off to you. E has always been, umm, highly strung. Colic turned into teething turned into toddlerhood. But dealing with that when you already have a toddler must be so draining. You're obviously awesome!

@blackbird: yes! I HAVE got this!

Only..... I did the routine we always do (its pretty similar to most of yours really), left the room, she jumped up and started screaming - nothing unusual there. Then half an hour into screamagheddon, she turned the monitor off!! So I had to go in (she was crashing about). I barely acknowledged her, lay her down, turned monitor on and left. While in there I noticed she has drunk the entire cup of water I left in there (for the first time)???? So I just brought it out again????

Brush Teeth
Kiss and goodnight
Turn on her sleep sheep
Bedtime

If she gets up or comes out of her room after bedtime, we just put her back in bed, say goodnight, and leave.

@Applesandbananas: Y'know I did buy some when she was a few weeks old but DH refused to use it because it made her too slippy! He did all baths then but now she is older and I do most baths I might get some more! Good idea.

@Mrs squirreld: Its pretty similar to most of these!! Although we don't bath every night because her skin is sensitive. But I might start. She just gets more and more wired during the routine! We give her some milk, bath her (she loves splashing but freaks when I try to wash her hair), do teeth in the bath, then dry her and get her into PJs (usually a battle while she wails from tiredness and tries to jump off the table into bed!). We dry her hair, during which she gets super wild and runs off repeatedly, jumps on the bed! Then we do stories but she's so wild and grumpy from tiredness she tries to grab the book repeatedly, frequently throws it away, runs off but falls over from tiredness. Then we put her into bed, projector on, lovvey and dummy, say night night - cue three hour scream fest.

@photojane: @Applesandbananas: we use lavender essential oil and lotion and she loves it!

We typically do:
Dinner
Bath immediately
Brush her teeth/hair
Lavender essential oil with lotion
Potty
Jammies and night time diaper
A couple books (she hasn't started asking for a million yet so we just cap it off after a few)
A quick song and prayer
Turn on white noise, put her in crib with her pillow and blanket

Also, after her bath, we make a point to turn off extra lights through the house to keep the mood. We just use a reading light for books.

Put in crib awake
Say "night night" and "love you"

My twins are almost 2 years old, and the routine has been the same since they were 3 months old with little tweaks here and there. This is what it has been the last year, pretty much:
5:15 dinner
5:45 milk & either stories at the table or dancing in their room, depending on their energy level
6:05 brush teeth
6:10 Baby A into bath, I either read or continue dancing w/ Baby B in their room
6:20 Baby B into bath, I put pj's on Baby A and read story in their room (2 books max)
6:30 I sing a lullaby, turn out lights, turn on sound machine & put Baby A down. Dad continues routine w/ Baby B in living room.
Some thoughts--since we switch order of babies each night as to who bathes first, they either get books in their room or living room. It doesn't seem to bother them to change places, as long as the routine is consistent. Also, right now they are really into light switches so I let them turn off the light in their room or living room before putting them into crib. I think that helps them understand it's bedtime.

@Cherrybee: have you tried a lavender bath? We use Johnson & Johnson bedtime bath, which is lavender scented and make the water very warm (not too hot, but a nice relaxing warm temperature) and make tons of bubbles so the whole bathroom has a nice cozy lavender scent. He loves bath time and plays and splashes but ultimately it does relax him.

Now that it's winter, I blow her hair dry after the bath, then brush her teeth. We do lotion/massage and jammies, then pick a couple books to read. After we read we cuddle for a few minutes, and say our bedtime prayers, then she I put her in the bed with a kiss.

We don't do bath every night so that isn't technically part of bedtime for us. And she always nurses before bed, but it isn't part of the very specific "bedtime routine". So our night is:
Nurse in the living room

(This is where I consider bedtime starting)
Brush teeth
Diaper change, pjs
At this point I dim the lights and turn the sound machine on low.
Stories on the bed in her room- we have a pile of books in there, she gets to pick which ones we read, I've started limiting it to three. She calms down while we read and is pretty snuggly.
Pick her up, sound machine volume up a little, lights down low, nightlight on, sing twinkle twinkle.
Put her in her crib, say have a good night, I love you, see you in the morning.

Before these last few weeks, she used to reach for her crib while I sang and turn right onto her belly to sleep. Now... She cries as soon as she hears twinkle twinkle, stands up in her crib and clings to me and screams. So, yeah. It's awesome.

At 16 months old....
6pm dinner
6.30pm bath
6.45pm brush teeth ( attempt!), get dressed whilst singing his bedtime songs ( and giving him random things to look at so he doesn't try and jump off the change table. haha)
6.50pm Gets his Owlie ( lovey..which he only gets at sleeptime so once he has this he usually starts to calm down) we sit down together and read a book.
6.55pm Lights out and cuddle with mumma, rock him a little, have his bed time music playing & give him his milk in his straw sippy cup if he wants it.
7pm Bed time... white noise on, into his bed, blanket on. Tell him "time for nigh nighs, love you, see you in the morning" ( say the same thing every night ) leave the room.

We have been doing a version of this since he was 4 weeks old.. a few things has altered slightly but not much at all... always sang him the same songs, always had the same music playing whilst he breastfeed/now drinks on his own, always had the white noise.... we are about to wean him off the white noise next month.

I am sorry you are having a rough time.... what is your current routine? Or is it just chaos? :-)

@Cherrybee: They happen on a chair in her room. We have a rule though, if she wants to get down then it's bed time. Does E still get milk? Could you give her milk or even water after her bath to get her sitting still and start reading while she is drinking?

I put her into her cot. Sometimes she reaches for it before I am done saying goodnight but maybe only 50% of the time.

@AprilFool: @regberadaisy: Where do books happen? And our your LOs calm after their stories? We currently do books in our bedroom but she just wants to bounce on the bed or run away! She's always super excited after her bath!

Also, do they get into bed themselves? E is still in her cot but I wonder if she would fare better if it was her choice to get into bed?? Or not!!!

DD 1 is 32m and we've been doing this for ages. She gets bath, pj's / lotion, story, then we turn on nightlight, sound machine and sing a song then say night night. Sometimes she might get a little play time between PJ and story.
