@hellobeeboston: I'm glad I could provide a distraction from work! And the room looks great with some color! I particularly like the idea of colored curtains, to bring some color up higher in the room.

@T.H.O.U.: Yes, the chair would be an easy place to make a change.

I'm now planning to have the cabinet match the other cabinet. But my new thing to think about is a more coherent plan for a bolder color scheme.

@hellobeeboston: Cute! I think that chair on the right could get a quick and easy slip cover in a new color too!

@Ms maths: since i'm totally ignoring my work and playing with this instead, haha.. I was thinking you can just add some color with the curtains and a new rug - then everything else can be neutral - maybe have one of the chairs re-covered. SUPER FAST idea, and totally don't know your style taste/fave colors so i just put some bright colors to see the comparison/difference it makes.

@hellobeeboston: Thanks for putting together the overlays! They were really helpful to see.

Everyone's comments are helping me think through the whole room. I think the lack of color in the room is definitely an issue for me. I had been thinking of that as a separate problem, but maybe I've been trying to solve that problem with this cabinet. I could paint the cabinet, but I'll probably try other options getting color and interest into the room that are less permanent.

I would probably match the other cabinet, i think it would match that room the best... some color overlays:

I would probably paint/stain a pop of color, probably a light teal, kind of pastel looking?

@Madison43: Yes, we need some color somewhere! Our furniture is mostly either a hand-me-down or from Craigslist; so I use that to excuse the sea of sameness. But also because figuring out color is hard! (at least for me.)

Oh man - I think it would fun to paint/stain something fun to give the room a pop of color. I've seen some antique looking red or turquoise pieces recently that I thought were awesome.

Anyone want to give design advice??

I'm trying to decide on stain color for a new cabinet in our living room, made by an aquaintance woodworker. See pictures below.

The first picture has the unfinished cabinet in the front. He built us a TV cabinet in the same style a while ago; it’s in the background in the first picture and highlighted in the second picture. Now I have to decide what to do with the cabinet. (It's made from hickory, which has a lot of color variation naturally; I don't want that variation, so I definitely plan to apply some sort of stain rather than just a clear finish.)

Options:
-Match the TV cabinet. The two cabinets are meant to be related to each other, so making them the same color seems a reasonable approach.
-Go with a lighter color but in the same color family (rich with red undertones.) Our house has the original chestnut trim, which we have refinished ourselves. We love it, but there is ALOT of darkish wood in our house. So having a lighter color might help lighten up the space. And maybe having the cabinets in different finished would be like a cool variation and keep things from feeling too matchy-matchy. (I wish I had chosen a lighter finish for the TV cabinet, but I can't easily change that now.)

I hope we have these cabinets forever, so it feels like a big decision. Any advice welcome!
