Shameless bump because I have the pros coming to measure the windows and pick fabric next week.

Current Plan: long drapes hung above transom (small window above slider) for the sliders. Plantation shutters for skinny window and transoms that can be opened and closed easily.

Proposed Plan: use slider drape fabric on the smaller windows somehow. NOT more drapes BUT can still open and close window treatment to filter light on both skinny window and square transom above it.

Q:
1) Do you think Current Plan is a good one?
2) How do you think Proposed Plan would work, if at all?

@Leialou: I don't sew. JCP is hooking up the windows.

@Crumbs: Yes, that is what we are doing for the sliders. EDIT: long black out curtains full rod to completely close them.

The smaller windows, as of now, will have Plantation shutters, which are very different window coverings in such close proximity to the long black out curtains.

We don't want curtains for the smaller windows, but I am open to using fabric instead of shutters for them. The problem is controlling the light for the transom if its a fabric shade.

I would do something like @Crumbs first picture. I love long curtains. If you have a sewing matching black out curtains are very easy to make. You could customize them to your windows.

Have you checked out Houzz.com - there are a lot of options, mostly long curtains though: http://www.houzz.com/Draperies-and-Window-Treatments-transom

Another idea would be to 'board up' the higher windows. I think it looks kind of cool and pretty practical too.

Ok, over the next few weeks I am probably going to post several home decor questions. For one its my passion and two DH finally gave me the green light to finish the rooms. DH of course wants no part in the process except to ask how much it costs!

Today's question centers around windows for our family room. The goal is to get the room as dark as possible when watching movies.

We have sliding doors with extra full pane on either side and a transom on top. Then we have two skinny windows on the adjacent wall with small transoms too.

Here's what we are thinking. Black out drapes hung from above the transom for the sliders. The rod would be white to match the crown molding. Our floors are dark brown (@Mrs.Jacks: for that one). Then the small windows and transoms would be whute Plantation shutters. The shutter would be built to hide the fact there's about a foot of wall slave between window and transom to allow us to adjust light without having a step stool.

My other idea is to use Roman Shades on the small windows in matching slider fabric. But, what will we do with the transoms?

Do you think Plantation shutters so close to so much fabric will look okay? (Plantation shutters for the sliders is out-DH vetoed already). Also, I have scoured the Internet looking for inspiration photos with dilemma/ setup similar to mine and have come up empty handed.

Thanks for the input!
