@prettylizy: yeah, dark furniture was the biggest mistake this dusting-hater made! Our house is all dark except for the nursery!

Thanks for the ideas guys. As soon as we moved in I was disappointed how our sofas looked in that room.
I like the idea of doing the little shelf a fun color (bonus it's real wood so it should be easier than pressed board!). I need to give the rest of the wood a facelift regardless because it's pretty dinged and scratched even if we leave it dark. The only reason I was thinking lighter was because it doesn't show as much dust! Lol!

I agree with everyone else. I wouldn't paint your furniture but make changes to the paint color and decorations instead.

I agree with the others - leave the dark furniture alone, paint the light shelf a fun color, add colorful pillows.

I agree with Mrs. Stroller. I'd leave the dark wood pieces, paint the small bookshelf something fun, add pillows, and would paint the walls a more complimentary color. I think the trouble comes from having brown walls, brown sofa, brown chair, brown trim and dark brown wood furniture. If you changed the wall color it will make the other pieces have a bit more contrast and will seem more cohesive.

Ok, I would paint the light pressed-board bookshelf, but nothing else (read up on painting pressed-board before you do it, you need a good primer). To add a pop of color I would use throw pillows instead. The dark furniture is nice and neutral and looks like it's stained(?) I think you may end up disappointed with painted furniture that shows scratches easily (ahem, kiddos).

What's your favorite color? I would do a bold pillow color in 3 different prints and paint the bookshelf to match.

If this were my space and I really wanted to change the look of the room, then I'd lighten up the walls a little and go with a more light gray to complement the browns of the couches and stone wall, but tone down the overall orangy-brownish-taupe you've got going on with the current wall color and all the leather. And then, if you're up for it, you could take your fireplace cover outside, tape it off and spray the brass areas with a matte stainless/nickle color spray paint to blend with the new walls and to let the stone wall be more of a focal point. Whew, that was a total tangent!

I'm planning to repaint the wood furniture in our basement, but I don't know what color to go with? I was thinking taupe at first to go with our stone wall, but I'm thinking maybe this would be a chance to add a pop of color. Please excuse the mess, this room has been neglected. I want to paint the coffee and end tables, the tv stand and the bookcase.
