I hate the maternity stores! I always feel stalked, and just want to be left alone.

Plus, to be honest, I am cheap when it comes to clothes, so I don't like to spend the money on them. I'm much happier finding something inexpensive on the sale rack of any of the regular department stores or Ross.

@skibobrown & @Mrs. Yoyo: I did agree to their email list because I got a huge bag of coupons and freebies for signing up and because I have an email address just for this sort of thing. It's the same one I used when I was getting married and wanted lots of crap email. :) Also, there is always the unsubscribe button.

I just went this past weekend. They hovered. But, honestly I liked the juice and that they brought my stuff to the dressing room. I didn't find it annoying.

The one thing I was annoyed about is their offer to sign you up for Parenting Mag. Sounds great but when you read the fine print, they will start charging you unannounced when the trial period ends!

Yeah, they hovered like crazy. I appreciated the juice, and I actually also appreciated that they brought stuff to the dressing room for me. Normally I hate when salespeople hover like that, but I went to the store w/ my aunt who was going to pretty much buy me whatever I wanted. So we were looking at a lot of clothes, and it was nice to have someone run around to find me more items or pick out sizes for me.

I also agree with YoYo that it's super annoying that they basically asked for my life story at checkout. Can't we just buy some clothes and be done with it? Now I get a million emails and snail mail offers from them that I don't want. Ugh.

My MIL and I went to A Pea in the Pod last week and OMG they must have sensed this is my MIL’s first grandchild and that she was paying because they were all over me/us. I tried a bunch of stuff on, and when they started the dressing room for me, they just went ahead and put an entire rack of clothes I had not picked out in there too because they thought “I’d just LOVE them!!!’. Then every time they checked on me to see if I needed any items removed or wanted more water (like every 3 minutes), they would remove the items I didn’t want, and hand me more to try on – without even asking! I finally had to tell the sales lady I needed some space because its was too much and overwhelming. It just wasn’t fun, at all.

(But I did get lots of cute clothes, so that was awesome!)

I'm wondering if everyone else's Motherhood Maternity was a stand-alone? Mine was in a mall and there was only one worker there. She said hello when I walked in, asked my name for the dressing room (when I needed it) and other than that, left me alone. I liked that there was a TV with ESPN on and a couple of leather chairs so my husband had somewhere to hang out while I was shopping.

I did come out with good deals, though. Some dress pants and an awesome soft and stretchy 3/4 sleeve dress that I'm hoping will last me through the end of this pregnancy since I'm due in early June. I found the items that were good deals were Motherhood and the Pea in the Pod stuff was RIDICULOUSLY expensive....for what I'm willing to spend.

I haven't been yet, but I always shoot them down when they ask for personal info (even when they only want my zip code at the register-- sorry, but you need to pay your marketing department if you want to find out more info about your shoppers).

Interesting. I hadn't heard of this store but of course as soon as I read your post, I had to google it and found one near me. Now I think I need to go just to see if they are the same way here. :)
ETA: That will be after Christmas since they're in the mall that is always insanely crowded this week.

I've only ever been to Motherhood and it's a small store, so they don't need to follow you around in order to see what you're doing, lol. She was definitely attentive, but it wasn't overwhelming. I actually liked that she was watching what I was picking up and brought some other stuff that was similar.

Also, I'm glad I gave them my address, I've gotten some great coupons and free products in the mail! (free binkies, stretch mark cream samples, and breastfeeding pads)

I haven't been to Destination Maternity, but I have been to A Pea in the Pod. But the service was somewhat similar, although no one followed me around, but they were very attentive when I started to look through sizes or was looking at something I couldn't reach.

I actually enjoyed all the attention--I didn't have to carry any clothes around the store or find my size. I got my girls measured, I got some water, didn't have to leave the fitting room for sizes.

I've been followed around a store for the wrong reason before...but this felt like pampering to me :)

They tried to do that to me, but according to my husband, I have a very good "death glare" that makes clear that I don't want to be bothered. After that, they left me alone.

HOWEVER. /begin rant

I *hate* their check-out policy -- i.e. give us every personal detail about you so we can then constantly spam you with baby crap. I refused to give the info and the woman was clearly annoyed with me. In fact, she offered the woman who checked out before me a bottle of water, and didn't offer me any after I refused to give her my info. I'm sorry, but you don't need my social security number for me to buy a pair of maternity jeans.

/end rant

So yesterday I went to a destination maternity store near me. Overall it was a good experience, but a bit overwhelming, they wouldnt leave me alone to shop, they were constantly asking me if I wanted water, juice, something to eat... everytime I had more than 2 garments in my hand they would come take them away from me to hang them in my changing room. They kept asking me if I was finding everything. They kept offering me free massages... I went with my husband he thought they were hovering over us a way too much and thought they were suspicious we were trying to steal something since we came dressed in sweats and jeans? But I think they were the same with the other customers too. Was this your experience when you shopped there? I am the type of shopper that likes to be left alone and I kept telling them I would ask for help if I needed it. I think I would have bought way more stuff if they had given me more space and freedom to shop on my own.

I did end up with some great deals.. I got a pair of extra long work/dress pants with panel, and 3 occassion dresses for some parties I have coming up, all for under $100
