Our tech (who is awesome, and uses a great US machine--in our hospital) guessed correctly right before 13 weeks. I think it all depends on baby's cooperation and the quality of the machine! Good luck! :)

Nothing is certain until birth, but there's a decent chance they will be able to tell. The elective place I went to has 99.9% success rate at 16 weeks. That's the earliest they do them. That being said, we went at 15.5 and they were correct about girl. That's also what we were told at 12 weeks based on nub theory.

@simplyfelicity: If you have it done before 14 weeks, they can measure the NT and check for the presence of the nasal bone, both of which can raise red flags for DS. A high NT measurement can raise concerns about multiple issues. I don't know that they would give you odds ratios based on the NT alone (if you have decided to forgo bloodwork)... if you don't want it, maybe you could ask them not to give you odds? Just wanted to make sure you didn't want NT measurements, since they can't do that after 14 weeks (as certain features that need to be seen on the scan are not present after that point). Not sure about gender at 15 weeks...I would think there's a decent possibility they could tell you.

My tech made an educated guess yesterday at 12 weeks, 5 days (but baby measuring a week ahead). I don't know if I buy it, though. And she said she wouldn't paint the nursery or anything. We'll see in a few weeks if she was right.

@simplyfelicity: the NT scan is an ultrasound and blood work, is what I meant. Where verify, harmony, materniT21 are all just blood tests. I assume then they just offered to do an ultrasound for you around 12 weeks. Will it be your first one or did you have an early dating scan!?

@simplyfelicity: NT scans usually have blood work with them yes and they do have some false positives. I do it because I want to be prepared and I don't want to pay OOP for the bigger tests, so If this showed something my insurance would cover those bigger blood tests.

They may just be doing a standard ultrasound/growth check then :) that's totally fine In that case at 15 weeks or whenever they want to do it ! Lol

@BabyPenguinXO: @Tidybee: I know little to none about these, so let me know if I am wrong but we decided to not get the testing and just have a scan. The whole testing and odds thing kind of freaks me out when it sometimes isn't even true.

@simplyfelicity: completely off topic but is this your nt scan? They actually wouldn't let me schedule mine past 14 weeks (same problem with the holidays) because they didn't think the measurements would be accurate.

A little off topic but are you just having a 12 week ultrasound or is it the first trimester screening? Because those are only accurate for the NT fold measurements up to 13 w 6 d so I would be concerned about waiting until 15 weeks unless it's just a check up scan.

With that being said, if baby cooperates they should know! Ask them to check the goods and tbay its not the umbilical cord. They can turn the color stuffs on and see blood flow. Our tech did that with my son to confirm the junk she was seeing was penis and not umbilical cord.

@simplyfelicity: Oh then I would totally bet you're good  For this LO's gender u/s at my practice on their equipment, I saw the 3 lines on the screen literally within seconds. I said, "I think I already see 3 lines..." And the tech smiled and said, "I think I do too, but we're just going to be sure..."And we were 100% confirmed within literally 2 minutes. With my first LO at the 3d/4d place, it took a lot longer and even though my potty shot was clear, it wasn't as apparent on the screen. If your practice has that high level equipment, I REALLY think it will be pretty easy to tell:) It was so obvious for this one!
