10 year age gap here, so our oldest's gifts are significantly more expensive than our litte one's gifts because he wants specific things whereas the little one gets what we want to buy him. {Last year he got toys, sleep sacks, and lots of formula.}

Quantity is fairly even between both.

We plan to do some variation of 'something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read', and if we ever had two, we'd make sure to stick to that.

@Mae: Same! I always wanted a lot of books, plus something a lot more $$ than my sister, so she would wrap each book individually... haha

My mom always did BOTH. But she had to do some funny things to make it work out right. Like my brother always asked for more expensive stuff than I did, so he'd often get like, a package of socks wrapped up to make the gift # equal haha.

We have 6 nieces and nephews so with them I've started a rule of 2 items and a total per child limit. My rule is one fun item and one educational item.
I think with kids they will recognize child a got 3 gifts why did I only get 2.

However, my niece and nephews are getting older and understand the concept of money now. So one nephew asked for an expensive gift that is almost budget limit so he will only be getting one gift this year.

My niece and nephews always open Christmas and birthday gifts together. And they know we are very fair about it. Even my brother's and SIL know that we always spend and buy the exact same number of gifts so as not to play favorites.

I will employ the same philosophy when we have more than one child.

I kind of think it depends on their ages. When kids are younger they look at quantity of items, so I think once we have two I would try and keep equal amount of items. Once they are a bit older and understand value then I wouldn't worry so much about even number of gifts and go by a set amount for each kid.

I do cost vs quantity for people I buy for. Nieces and nephews all get $25 worth of gifts, so if they ask for a toy that's $25 that's all they get. We will do the same with our kids too, a set amount and whatever they can get with that is what they get!

How do you decide how much to spend on your kids for Christmas. Mine are still fairly young so they aren't asking for $200 gifts thank goodness!

Last year I got both kids 6 things and that was that - I didn't really add up to make sure I spent the same on each child.
I plan on doing the same thing this year. although my 5 yrs old things are more pricey than my DD's.

How do you do it?
