@rins72: That's great news that the vet doesn't think they need to be removed!!!

Update: Vet said he thought the worst was over and didn't recommend removing it. He did give me an anti-inflammatory med to use for a week or so until it is healed.

Thanks again for the input!

@MrsBrewer: Ah, didn't know that. I remember when we adopted him they told to make sure to keep them trimmed so he wouldn't snag them and rip them off, but that it shouldn't be an issue. But that front one is just so troublesome, even when it's short!

@rins72: Also I wanted to add, that normally dew claws on dogs are actually removed at birth, or actually when the dog is 2-3 days old. But for both of our dogs, my husband's uncle (who we got the dogs from) had no idea you were supposed to do that. It's normally not that big of a deal though to keep them, expect obviously in your case when your pup is getting injured from them.

@mrs. bird: We had our cats declawed and our vet did it with laser, and we had that same exact vet remove the dew claws on our dog, and he was not able to use a laser. :-( I'm sure it's because it's a much larger area? I really have no idea.....I just know that we requested it, and he wasn't able to for our dog :-(

@rins72: You know what though, my husband and I both worked during his recovery, we just kept the cone on him when we weren't home with him, and we drugged him. It sounds bad, but we gave him Benedryl every day, just to keep him calm and to let him rest!

@MrsH: It usually happens when he's playing fetch out back. It's his very favorite game and he definitely needs to get that energy out, so we can't prevent him from doing it.

It only happens to the one claw, so I think that would be the only one I would consider removing, unless my vet recommends otherwise. I know that it's a major surgery, but I also don't want him to keep re-injuring it. I'm not sure if maybe it wasn't formed properly when he was a puppy and that's why it keeps breaking?

@MrsBrewer: Ugh, this would be my fear. I work in the schools and we start back next Tuesday. So if he does have it removed, I'm not going to be able to babysit him post-surgery. Of course he couldn't have injured it any time in the last three months! :silly:

@mrs. bird: From what I read, if a dog is going to have its dewclaws removed it is usually done during the spay/neuter surgery. Unfortunately we adopted our pup as an adult and he was already neutered, so that's not an option for us! Good luck with Wilson's surgery!

i don't know anything about dogs, but in two weeks my cat is having his extra claws removed (before anyone jumps down my throat, i'm not declawing my cat! he has numerous extra toes that don't have the bone structure to support the claws and they grow crooked so they will puncture his paw and catch on other claws if i don't have them removed, they're too thick to be cut without them splintering and causing him pain. it's a medical thing, not because i don't want him scratching my couch). the vet explained to me that when a laser is used to do it, i'm assuming it's similar for dogs, it cauterizes as it cuts so the bleeding stops and they heal faster. then, they close those toes with stitches and as long as they don't lick excessively, they heal very quickly, and a cone is sometimes needed, but not always. she said the earlier you do it, the less blood supply is in the claw and that makes it easier to heal from. wilson is having his claws done while he's already asleep for neutering, so i'm sure that cuts the price done a lot in my case, and he's just a little (errr... 11lb) nugget.

sounds like if they're causing that many issues, it would be in his best interest to discuss removing them to avoid further injury :( poor guy. he's very handsome!

It is pretty major surgery for an adult dog. Not a big deal when they are little. What is he doing that he keeps damaging them? Is there any way to stop the behavior? Our female lab has hers but they don't cause her a problem.

I have experience with this!!!

We waited to get our male dog neutered until he was 11 months, and at the same time, we got his dew claws removed. (he's a big dog, 90lb chocolate lab). My husband was planning on training him to be a hunting dog, so our vet advised us to get the dew claws removed, so that he would never snag it on anything while he was hunting.

It was rough, to be completely honest. He's a licker, so he was constantly trying to lick he wounds, and you couldn't keep them bandaged because they needed to be open to heal. One of his actually ended up opening back up and get infected....so it needed a few extra stitches. We put a cone on him while it was healing, but in the end he was able to bend the cone, and get around it to lick. So we just pretty much had to baby sit him.

But truthfully, since your poor pup has been having injuries with his dew claws, it probably is best to get them removed. I hope this doesn't scare you away at all, I just wanted to be completely honest and share our experience. I think from start to finish, it was about about a good 3 weeks.

I don't have any experience with this but I'll check with my friend. Her dog had numerous issues with her dewclaw, but I am not sure if they had it removed. Poor puppy! :(

We have a 3-year-old Rottie mix. He injured one of his front dewclaws yesterday and it seems to be pretty painful. I have a vet appointment later today, but I wanted to see if anyone has experience with this. This is the fourth or fifth time he has broken that same dewclaw in the year that we've had him, so I'm wondering if we should have it removed. From what I've read online, it's a lot more invasive (and therefore $$$) to remove them in adult dogs. Thoughts or experiences, anyone?

Obligatory picture. We put a sock on his foot overnight to keep him from licking it to death.
