@Pinkberrry: he got his first round on Friday. He was found on the side of the road and the vet says he's about 8 weeks but he could have picked up anything at this point. I'll call in the morning

@Mrs. Sunshine: yikes, blood in stool especially in puppies isn't good especially if it's not resolving with treatment. I would call the vet in the morning, they may want to run more tests and at least send home more oral meds to help firm up his stool. Is he up to date on his puppy vaccines?

@Pinkberrry: I gave him rice and turkey meat and he won't eat it. I've been picking up and bagging and putting his poop in the dumpster as well as changing his bedding everyday because I saw some yucky footprints in his dog house (he's an outdoor dog). He will drink but won't eat so I've been syringe feeding him a bit of yogurt every few hours or so. He's still very alert and willing to explore but not play or follow any commands he usually follows. I did notice blood the last time I picked up poop. It's getting runnier and darker in color

For hookworms or really any intestinal parasite infestation, always use good hygiene. Pick up stool immediately after your pup goes potty and I'd even goes as far as to wipe his tush with a baby wipe after he goes to prevent reinfestation. Also the initial dewormer kills the adult worms however with the parasites life cycle he'll need the additional dewormer at least to kill off any remaining worms in his GI tract, followed by a recheck of his stool sample a few weeks after that.

With hookworms I can't stress enough how important it is to keep your pups environment clean and pick up the stool immediately as the parasite can live in the soil for many months and can be picked up by you walking through your yard barefoot.

As far as the lack of appetite, that should improve in the next day or so, if not call your vet and your pup may need a recheck. Try offering a more palatable food to get his appetite going (boiled chicken or rice).

Hookworms in a puppy :crying: hopefully a vet/vet tech will chime in but I know from working with/in dog rescue that hookworms often kill puppies; so yes, you may have to address that with your Lo (sorry). They are not like other "generic worms" a dog might need treatment for. What they do to dogs, especially puppies, is truly horrific.

Also - hookworms will be passed in the puppies poop and can live for months in soil so you really, really have to pick up his poop in a plastic trash bag and not leave it in your yard (or anywhere else on the ground). Other dogs in the future visiting your home months from now could get infected that way.

I'm sorry to hear this, hookworms are one of the more miserable beasts out there.

@Mrs. Sunshine: it sounds like it might be a bit of a wait for the treatment to kick in. Poor little guy.

@Synchronicity: they gave him a dose at the vet and sent me home with a second dose to give him last night. Then I received another syringe that I'm supposed to give him once in the morning and once at night two whole weeks from now.

We opened our home to a puppy that was dumped on the side of the road. He was with my FIL for a week and we've had him for about 2 weeks. 2 days ago, he completely stopped eating and drinking and is refusing to get out of bed. He had an appointment for a check up/shots yesterday so I tried not to worry until we got him seen. The vet confirmed that he has hookworms, which explains his lack of appetite. He's been treated with a dewormer but he's not seeming any better yet. He's still very alert, no diarrhea or vomiting but you can already see all his ribs.

My question is, if your dog was already infected with hookworm and was being treated, how long did it take before you saw improvement? I can't seem to find an answer on Google but I want to know if there is hope or if this is the end. It's hard to watch and I want DD to be prepared.
