I really appreciate the replies - it's definitely making me feel better. I try not to be a paranoid parent, but after googling it and seeing all of the info saying she'll get food poisoning, I freaked out.

I don't follow the 1 hour rule very closely as long as the bottle doesn't sit out. We also don't warm bottles at all - we mix the formula with water from our fridge dispenser and he drinks them cold. But as long as the bottle got back in the fridge right away, I've given him bottles a few hours later, usually only 2 or 3. DS can be really inconsistent with how much he eats, so we'd be throwing formula away all the time if we followed that rule. DS has never gotten sick or had any issues.

The fact that it was in the fridge for the interval would have slowed the growth of bacteria etc quite a bit though. I'm sure she'll be perfectly fine!

So I've never totally understood how this risk of contamination works. Whatever bacteria ends up growing in the formula or milk... wasn't it introduced in the first place through the baby's saliva? Meaning that the baby had already been exposed? And while I understand that the bacteria could be multiplying in there, would you have to wait kind of a while (depending on the bacteria, I guess) for it to reach a threshold that would cause disease? And wouldn't the refrigeration slow down that process?

I had a similar experience! I left a bottle of milk out on my kitchen counter from the previous night. I was about to wash out the bottle when my phone rang and I went upstairs to answer it. My DH didn't know and fed it to him. I came downstairs when he was like half way through with it. I was FREAKING out. But he turned out ok (no food poisoning or anything) and no vomiting. So your LO could be fine too! Just look for any signs like vomiting or extra fussiness. Otherwise, you should be ok! :)

Let me start by saying DH feels awful about this and it really was an accident.

DH was watching LO while I was at the dentist and she got hungry. He saw a bottle in the fridge and assumed it was breastmilk and gave it to her. Unfortunately, that was formula that was left over from a feeding this morning. (My supply is low and I've had to supplement with formula every now and then)

She had only taken a couple sips from it so I figured she would want more shortly, and I put it in the fridge, only to forget to dump it out after an hour. DH gave her the rest of that bottle about 6 hours after I had initially tried to give it to her and now I'm totally freaking out, afraid that she's going to get food poisoning from it. I called the pediatrician and she said that she should be ok but to just be on the lookout for any vomitting.

Anyone had anything like this happen? If so, what was the outcome? I need some good news right now - I feel horrible that I didn't throw out the bottle ... because of my laziness, she could potentially have to go to the ER tonight. :-(
