@corduroy I'm glad LO is okay and is hopefully on the upswing. I just wanted to chime in and say that my grandma was a nurse (and a very good one at that) but when it came to dealing with family members illnesses, she tended to have a "suck it up" attitude. We were never sick enough to worry her apparently!

I don't mess around, in my mind better safe than sorry. We just took DD1 in for her lingering cough, yes it turned out be nothing, but with a newborn I wasn't risking it.

@Corduroy: @Adira: @2PeasinaPod: @kiddosc: It's what we were taught in nursing school, although we were also taught that some pedi's still recommend/prefer them.

On a personal note, my DD cannot have them because she is neutropenic (she cannot really have anything, like enemas or catheters, done) and I mention it to new docs/nurses since a lot do not know neutropenic protocol and some still prefer rectals. More than a few occasions we have been told that rectal temps are not recommended for anyone anymore by medical professionals.

I'd still follow your doctors advice if you are comfortable doing them. I was just stating that maybe this is what @Corduroy: MIL has been taught/heard and that is why she said a rectal is only something a mother can do.

ETA: all the hospitals around here do axillary on infants

@anbanan15: Rectal temps not being recommended anymore is news to me. My pediatrician always indicates that the most accurate temperature is taken rectally with an infant.

@anbanan15: Is that based on age? My HMO still requests it when reporting temperatures. I don't love doing it but I get what seem to be much more consistent results and usually use it as a backup when things don't add up (like the initial 105F reading I got, and the no fever with breathing symptoms)

Maybe she wasn't comfortable doing a rectal temp because they aren't really recommended anymore? And instead of just saying that she made it about her?

I would have come home too, but wouldn't have done a rectal temp (my DD cannot have them anyway). Glad everything worked out. Hope your LO is feeling better!

@Corduroy: I think it's super bizarre that your MIL thinks any of this has anything to do with her being a nurse. My Dh has an uncle who is an (adult) doctor. Last Christmas, we were visiting his family in Canada when LO spiked a fever that went up to 103.

Her fever was responding to tylenol/motrin alternated so I wasn't super worried (and we were scheduled to drive home the next day back to the states), but my In-laws insisted on calling the doctor uncle--who very sweetly told me that he would *never* give medical advice for a baby and I should absolutely trust my mommy instincts and probably get her checked out by a pediatrician when we got back to the states.

It ended up just being a virus and all was fine. but it's not a pissing contest--who care if she's a nurse? If you want her to be checked on, you are the parent. grrr...

@Adira: @T.H.O.U.: And she worked in a colonoscopy office for over 5 years!! But seriously, I'm not trying to take the blame off of DH who should have stepped up and done it without hesitation. It does not take a colonoscopy nurse to check a temperature.

Thanks everyone. I called into the advice line and the nurse gave me some respiratory rates to look for. LO's breathing was not outside the zone. That made me feel a lot better but I still wasn't totally satisfied. It wasn't helping that DH kept texting me photos of LO laying on the floor looking terribly sick alternating with pictures of her running around. One second he would tell me her breathing was weird, then he would say that isn't what he meant and it was fine. I got super pissed off, cried and ended up coming home early to figure out what was going on. I don't think he had any idea what he was doing to me.

Turns out LO's fever did return. DH and MIL were taking LO's temporal temperature next to an open window on a breezy day. Naturally it did not register a fever. Apparently none of the three adults home with LO (including her father and nurse grandma) could handle using the rectal thermometer like I asked... MIL said that's something only mommy can do. Lucky me. I felt better once I saw that it read 101F. Her breathing was in line with what I've seen from her at that temp every time in the past and what the advice nurse told me to expect.

So now MIL thinks I don't respect her as a nurse, DH thinks I don't respect him as a dad, they both think I'm a crazy but we all came to the conclusion that LO just has a regular old cold for now.

@Corduroy: Hope everything turned out okay!

I would've also given advice to take her. I had an incident with Xander last year that I really thought was going to be NOTHING, but I felt obligated to take him in to see the pediatrician anyway just to be on the safe side. They made us go to the ER, which I thought was a waste of time, but he ended up in the PICU for 2 days!

So it's always better to just be cautious, even if it seems silly. Especially with breathing issues - you just never know when they might take a turn.

@Corduroy: We can get weekend appointment too, but only with whoever is on call. If my LO is sick on Fridays I always take her in because I prefer for her to see her primary pediatrician who knows her medical history best. I certainly hope you husband wouldn't make you take off work to bring her in when he already has the day off!

My rule of thumb is to wait and see if I'm not sure UNLESS its Friday, then I always take LO to the pediatrician. If things get worse over the weekend, I don't want to end up at Urgent Care or the ER.
