I think, from personal experience, it's from lack of trying. I usually have to suggest my husband get up and bounce or dance with the baby if she can't be soothed. Paci, swing, bouncy seat, dance, rock. You have to run the gamut. I think since they're not with them all day like we are, they just don't get it as easily. They have worked all day/week and just want it to be easy.

Watch 'the happiest baby on the block' or look up you tube of people demonstrating the technique. It really empowered my husband to be able to feel confident taking care of our LO when she was tiny.
It's basically try a combo of swaddle, turning them on their side, shushing sound near their ear, sway them back and forth, and suck on a pacifier,

That happens to us when my 4-month-old is tired and hungry. Once he hands him over to me he stops. It's funny yet not. But I think he's getting better and better now that my husband sings to him and distracts him with toys. Have your husband try that. Maybe he just needs some entertainment. I also noticed that if he's not tired he doesn't like to be held in a cradle position. He has to be upright. Particular little one! Hope it gets better for you and your DH!

@Magilnyc: oh haha well he can't complain that he can't soothe him if he doesn't try other things!
When M fusses you have to get up! No sitting down. Rocking sitting down never works!

@regberadaisy: he has been alone with him before, but not much. I am still on maternity leave so I am with him all day everyday. I think it's that he doesn't try different things to soothe him. He just kind of rocks him as he sits on the couch. When i suggest that he stand up or change position he gets mad that I am telling him how to be a parent. It is so frustrating!

Is this the first time he's been alone with her? Has he had issues calming her before?
It's possible she's just having a I need mommy day.

No advice, but I sure have been there!,DH lifts her up in the air and she seems to like that. When she is really stressing out though, I am still the only one that can really soothe her. Boobs; he doesn't have them! :)

So I just got back from getting my nails done and DS was screaming. dH said he screamed the whole time I was gone. He changed his diaper, tried to feed him, etc, nothing worked. He was rocking him and trying to calm him and getting really frustrated. As soon as I held him, he calmed right down. DH is worried that we will never be to leave him with anyone because he only is calm with me. DS is 2 month old. Any advise on this one?
