My dh's employer was going to switch everyone with his previous title from salaried to hourly years ago. They never went through with it and I suspect it's because they did the math and realized it would cost them MORE, not less since he travels so much and works 12 hour days even when he's not traveling. I think the workers in CA from both of our companies are allowed to collect overtime for traveling after hours and going to dinners, evening functions, etc. even though they are salaried. I don't know all the details about it, I just suspect this after years of hearing things when going to national functions where CA employees are present. Anyway, he was promoted shortly after we heard about this so it doesn't apply anyway.

I know you mentioned you budget obsessively. We do too, but we recently started using goodbudget because you can see detailed graphs about everything (past history) in it. This might help you see you pay patterns or spending patterns easily. You can even tag expenses and sort by your own tags. It is the detail oriented envelope budgeters dream, even more than YNAB.

@gingerbebe: @looch: Thank you, this has been really helpful. I realized that I definitely had not been budgeting properly to deal with him not begin on salary anymore. I just took the average of the last 7 paychecks and I wasn't too far off with my estimate of what he should get paid but I have had no mechanism set up for when he gets paid less. I'm going to set some money aside in the savings accounts attached to our bank accounts (that accrues almost no interest so we don't really use anymore) just to have a better buffer system. Thanks ladies!

@NCSUchick27: oh man, that is terrible about the shut down. I'm glad he was at least able to keep working but that must have been tough dealing with the lack of paycheck until it was over. Thanks Congress! Doing a heck of a job for the American people! :silly:
@Eko: I've realized I need to reconfigure how I do our budget. Idk why it took me this long!
@thestairs: Hourly pay definitely works out favorable for some people but 70 hours is a heck of a work week!
@arosebyany: I'm a teacher so I understand the lack of overtime pay! I would be much happier with him getting salary if he got much overtime but it's mostly him not even getting 40 hours (mostly due to needing to take vacation time off unpaid).

DH has always been hourly, which we enjoy. Anything over 40 is time and a half. He's now in a supervisor position so he also gets paid holidays (2x hourly wage)and vacation time. I worked a salaried job with no option for overtime pay, and I hated that! we put a lot of money in savings when he's working overtime to compensate for the weeks when he's working 40hours. He does 4 ten hour days. So 40 hour weeks are his short weeks.

My husband never salary, it always hourly pay for him. And he does get paid for overtime (after 40 hours).
I prefer hourly pay.
His normal hourly paid is $35 an hour. After 40 hours work, he gets pay 1.5x more for OT.

He work 70 hours a week.
So the first 40 hours he works, he gets pay $35 an hour.
Then after that, the 30 hours overtime he works he gets $52.5 an hour (because 1.5x of $35).

It not bad, his paycheck is $3K a week. He does work really hard, he has to work 70 hours to get that $3,000 a week paycheck.

He does get pay weekly (a year there 52 weeks). I love weekly paychecks because there months where there are 31 days, so it climb over to an extra week next month.

I get paid hourly and DH gets paid off of commission. So, both of our checks are not salary. We basically know what are minimum income is every month and budget off of that. I don't budget on money I might have. Anything extra is a bonus. I get OT pay so it more often works out that our checks are bigger then expected. It averages out for us.

DH is paid hourly, and he works a rotating shift schedule. His paychecks are never the same. His hourly rate changes based on the time of day, day of the week, and whether it is a holiday. When he works overtime he either gets paid an overtime rate or he can accrue comp time. He also accrues paid vacation time. He is guaranteed at least 40 hours per week.

He is also a federal employee so we have had to deal with government shutdowns where he had to go to work since he is considered an essential employee, but didn't receive a paycheck until the shutdown was over.

@petitenoisette: I definitely think budgeting based on a 36 hour work week would probably be best year round if he's not getting paid for holidays or like the Friday after Thanksgiving and then also assuming he will need to be out sick a day or two here and there. Hugs.

My husband is self employed. He was working an additional salaried job, but he's quitting at the end of the year. His salaried job was mostly a tax and retirement vehicle for our family and a source of benefits when I took my long maternity leaves, so we mainly live off his business income. We budget based on his previous month's income for the most part because we know 5 years in generally the months we need to keep close track and when things should be thicker, but you can probably just average his income over the last six months (since its June) and base your household budget on that. If you are saving, I would set aside a small fund and treat it like a family overdraft protection system. If you draw out of it, you pay it back next month, etc.

DH gets paid hourly and there have been weeks with previous companies where he has worked less than average and his paycheck takes a hit. It sucks but it is what it is. At his current job they are slammed and he banks overtime hours every week at time and a half, so if they were to ever have a slow week (will likely never happen but who knows) he has that to top up his paycheck.

@caterw: yea for the most part he gets 40 hours but some days they just wrap up early (construction) and so that adds up over two weeks. Glad you guys are at a more stable place! And yea I should budget just for a 37-38 hour work week and be glad if he gets more. Thankfully this just impacts our savings rate and not our ability to pay our bills.
@2littlepumpkins: ugh sorry about the schedule instability. I think that is even worse :bummed:

Update is that the check was so low bc he didn't get paid for Memorial Day off. He'd been getting paid major holidays even though his company technically said they don't get them paid for the first year. So unfortunately it's not like he can inquire about it bc he shouldn't have been getting them in the first place.

@petitenoisette: in regards to the budget- we (thankfully) no longer have to deal with this, but when DH and I were both making hourly we would always base our budget off of the least amount of hours we were likely to get. DH usually worked overtime, but I would budget based on a paycheck of 40 hours and I got a minimum number of hours at part time so that's what we counted my income as. Anything else was savings.

Tbh it was awful to have that instability. DH got a salary right before we had DD and I was so thankful that he got paid vacation and a pay bump/ reliable money.

My dh does get paid hourly but he works at least full time every check. Our downside is that the schedule is always changing (hours, days on/off, mandatory overtime, unscheduled overtime that can be quite a few hours, etc.) Sorry you're dealing with the changing hours. That sounds super frustrating.

My DH is hourly. I don't watch his pay closely (I monitor the bank account, he asks me what we have to spend - this is what works for us). I have sort of a minimum that I expect his pay to be every two weeks and as long as it's over that I don't ask much. He's not allowed OT, unless there are certain situations. SO he's typically right around 40/week. His health benefits are far superior to mine and that's where we place value in his job because it's certainly not in his pay or some of the rules around the clock.

@josina: The little amount over/under every day really adds up!

I guess my problem here is not really getting paid hourly, but that the hours definitely fluctuate week to week (and in the winter his work got called off several times so not paid at all) and then the crappy benefits.

My DH gets hourly, but works for the county(state) so gets good benefits. He gets overtime pay over 40 hours, and is able to take PTO for anything less.
My last job was hourly, with zero benefits and sucked for that, I would make it a point to come in 10 minutes early each day because it was an extra hour of pay each week! (I know the hourly employees where I work now aren't allowed to do that).

I'm sure he just worked a few other shorter days over the course of the two weeks but it's not like I expect him to report to me daily that he worked a half an hour less. I'm going to ask him when he gets home and make sure nothing else was up - I am mainly venting here so I don't text him annoyed whiel he's still at work :silly: .

@mrsbubbletea: @mrskansas: I totally agree that if you're in a union getting paid hourly seems to work out much better. My DH is in construction but non-unionized.

Does he have a minimum # of hours he always works or is guaranteed by his company? Maybe budget off of that to soften the pain from fluctuations? My husband isn't hourly but does work in a commission based business so I totally get the frustration over varying pay checks. We set our spending so that our basic monthly needs can be easily met on just his salary portion of pay, even though his commission is the larger portion. That way, when he has a big swing in commission pay outs, it just affects our ability to save that month, vs our ability to pay bills.

@looch: Oh my postscripts are just that hourly wages tend to also be correlated with not much paid vacation (or any at all like you said is your case)! Obviously every situation is different. I just think this is tied into the messed up work culture in this country, though like you said sometimes this is the best case scenario for a person. In our case I wish he still was on salary! But he is much happier in his new job so I should appreciate that
