I know you posted this a couple of days ago, but I wanted to let you know that I got the flu when my DD was around 5 months old. It was awful! I was still exclusively breastfeeding her at that point so DH would just bring her up to bed every time she needed to eat, and would bring her back downstairs as soon as she was done. She never got sick. I've heard breastmilk is the best prevention, so just keep feeding as often as baby wants to eat and hopefully you both stay healthy.

@SweetiePie: @avivoca: @jh524: @Truth Bombs: @mrs.shinerbock: Thanks for the encouraging stories! I'm trying to stay optimistic since DH was only around LO & I for a couple of hours, asymptomatic, and he got diagnosed & treated the same day of showing symptoms, and came home and was immediately quarantined.

I think if DH is quarantined for 4 days (Thurs - Sunday) and he's feeling good enough to go to work on Monday (and symptom free enough he's not going to infect co-workers) then he should be good to do daycare pick up/drop off.

I don't have time to write a super long response but just wanted to say that when we had the flu in February, I was on tamiflu while breastfeeding, and they actually put DS2 (5 weeks old) on a low dose of tamiflu to prevent it. Cdc now recommends that after 2 weeks old, in certain cases.

LO1 had the flu when LO2 was approx 7 weeks old and LO2 was fine. I am recovering from the flu and LO2 is congested, but he's been congested for a while because all of us had colds last week. No other symptoms than that.

I think DH should be fine to take your baby to daycare - just make him wear a mask and latex gloves whenever he touches the baby. He will look nuts but who cares. And keep BFing!

A story of encouragement...I had the flu when LO was about 15 weeks Id say. Actually diagnosed and on tamiflu. DH claims he had the flu to this day but tested negative.
We took extreme precautions with LO and he never got the flu. I stayed quarantined as much as possible. Washed hands and used sanitizer like CRAZY. Used Lysol all over the house.
And extreme but I think effective - we wore masks. Outside of our quarantine room (we live in an apartment so it was hard to stay totally quarantined) we both wore masks for a week.
Amazingly LO never got it. I really do largely credit it to the masks.

@Truth Bombs: oh good point about allergies... I am allergic to dayquil and nyquil, I wonder if it shares any ingredients (I think it's the Dextromethorphan I'm allergic to, but I have not been tested.)

Just to clarify, Tamiflu has not been shown to work preventatively in children under 1 year of age, so I wouldn't consider that for the baby, but you could do it for yourself if you wanted to. When my LO was sick that wasn't an option for me because I'm actually allergic to Tamiflu, but I still managed to stay healthy.

ETA: I see you addressed this as I was typing

@jh524: yeah, pedatrician said no need for LO to take Tamiflu proactively but I forgot to ask if I could/should. I'll ask my dr & OB in the morning, I'm leaning towards a prescription if they're on board. And yes on the masks! I'm actually wearing one too, in case I am sick.

No experience with a kid, but I had the flu in 2010 and did not pas it to anyone. We lived in a 650 sq. ft. Apartment and there was just nowhere to go. I had to wipe everything down with a Lysol wipe and my husband slept on the couch. T is immune-compromised because he has diabetes, but he did not catch it. My doctor said I had to be quarantined until my fever was gone for 24 hours. I was out of work for a solid week and would have stayed out longer if I was able to use sick time (it was right at Christmas).

@DesertDreams88: sorry your going through this :( you probably don't want to hear this but my friend and her hubby and lo all got the flu shot. She came down with type B and took tamiflu and she's pregnant. Said lo had it first. The effectiveness of the flu shot is really poor this year. I would definitely quarantine him for 4-5 days but if he's feeling good on Monday, should be fine to go to work. Go get him a mask to wear and bath him in sanitizer!!!! Lol

Oh and when my hubby came down with the flu 2 years ago, while he was on shift at work, he came home on day 5 and I was scared he would give it to us. I got tamiflu for myself and lo to take. I was bf-ing as well. I took a half dose and gave lo a half dose. We didn't get the flu. But omg that's stuffs expensive but possibly worth it especially since your lo is so young.im not a big fan of tamiflu but you have to weigh its pros and cons.
Anyways, good luck and hope you all stay healthy.

And I thought you said 10 months old not 10 week old! I'm not sure if I'd give tamiflu to a 10 week old. Ahh! But like @truthbombs said, breastfeeding is the best defense for that baby!!!

No actual experience but, we had some illness this winter and my children were tested for the flu. My pediatrician did mention she could prescribe tamiflu preemptively, if one of my other kids had tested positive for the flu. I hope your sweet LO doesn't catch it!

@DesertDreams88: breastfeeding is honestly the best thing you can be doing in this situation. Since you have been exposed to your DH your body is already creating antibodies to fight the virus which are being passed on to LO. A few weeks ago my 3 year old tested positive for the flu. I was terrified my 3 month old would catch it, especially because they had been around each other all weekend before LO1 got sick and obviously a 3 year old's hygiene practices aren't always reliable! But we got older LO Tamiflu right away and kept them separated as much as humanly possible and the baby never got sick! Older LO's fever broke the same day she started Tamiflu. We kept them apart until 48 hours after the fever broke. CDC says 24 hours but we just wanted to be extra cautious.

DH developed flu symptoms today and was diagnosed with Flu B, and prescribed Tamiflu. He was interacting with LO for 4-5 hours yesterday night. LO has no symptoms and I only have a headache, which could definitely be stress. We both got the flu shot in November but as you know, it's not 100% effective. LOT is 10wks old, 13.5lbs (90th percentile), and EBF.

Minute clinic doctor said 2 days quarantine. CDC website says 5-7 days. Pediatrician said 7 days but then kind of wavered on that, saying it's "less of an issue once his symptoms subside." I have our spare bedroom & bathroom set up for him - snacks, books, clothes, tissues, extra trash can, computer & power cord, etc. He will be staying in those two rooms full-time for at least 4 days and probably the full 7. He is probably going to want to go back to work on Monday but I think I can persuade him to stay home, maybe.

Problem is, I go back to work on Monday (in 4-5 days depending on if you count today). He was supposed to do childcare drop-off and pick-up; since it is MUCH closer to his work. If I do this, it will mean 1.5hrs more in childcare for LO for each day, and of course this has to be his first week :(

1) Would you quarantine DH for 7 days regardless of symptoms?
2) I've read online that Tamiflu can be taken proactively, to prevent getting the flu if it's in your household. Online it says it's safe for breastfeeeding. Have any of you done this? I'll call my doctor & OB in the morning, but just wondering...

We try to follow all healthy precautions (washing hands often, sneezing/coughing into elbows or tissue, etc). I'm also washing all of our sheets & hand towels on hot, and running a sanitize cycle in the dishwasher.

Sorry for SUCH a long post. Also, would love encouraging stories about how your household had the flu but LO didn't get it :) @travellingbee: didn't you or DH get the flu this past season? I can't remember if it was before or after DS2?
