Oh, the doctor did say that there is nothing wrong with abnormal sperm. The DNA is still the same. That was good info to my ears. I was really concerned about that. She said 'just the packaging is off.' She showed me this picture. http://infertilityanswers.typepad.com/.a/6a00e55060d36c88340168e7bfb871970c-800wi

I had a little chuckle at giant sperm and micro sperm.

@bluestriped bee: :) I love that you were hoping there would be something magically there on the ultrasound. It sounds like the specialist had some good news for you and you will be able to work with this. FYI: a friend of mine had been trying for a while and had her tubes flushed. Next month, pregnant. Just sayin'. :)

Are you going to SF with dh? We went on a mini vacation there before we got pregnant. It was such a nice place to visit!!! (too darn expensive to live there, but we dreamed about it a bit). :)

@Mrs Green Grass: Thanks! From your last suggestion, I already got the DH to reduce his caffeine intake and told him to start taking his multi-vitamins again. I thought he was still taking them but then recently he stopped. He said he doesn't think vitamin gummies are a good way take them. I will feed him in his sleep, if I have to!

@mediagirl: Aww, thanks for thinking of me today. Yeah, it was okay, The bad news I got from it was my DH's morphology was abnormal with a value of 4% ... I didn't know what that number meant. Dr said it means 96% of his sperm was abnormal, 4% normal. Yikes! :( She said normal is more than 16%. She did say that she could work with 4%. If it was 0%, we would have to consider IVF.

She doesn't think my DH's past and current medication has anything to do with his SA. Which is good.

I now have to get checked out. I had an ultra sound done and it looked fine. I need to wait until AF shows so I can get some blood tests and other test done at CD3. Then on CD5-7, they are scheduling a fallopian tube flush to see if my tubes are open. (This is called Hysterosalpingogram - http://www.fertilityfactor.com/fertility_tests_hysterosalpingogram.html

Then we'll go from there. She also said there is an increase of pregnancy following a tube flush procedure since it opens everything up.

She said it is possible to use DH's sperm and do a sperm float test where they capture the sperm that float/swim to the top and then do an IUI.

So overall good news. I was hoping that I was magically pregnant when they did the ultrasound, but it didn't happen. ;)

So, nothing happening this month. Guess that next thing I can do is relax on my trip to San Fran this weekend and BD as usual.

@bluestriped bee: My DH's morphology was 4%. My doc said average is about 8%. He also said that he's seen pregnancies with 1%. Morphology might increase your need for IVF with ICSI where they inject the sperm. That's what I had to do. But remember that it only takes 1! 4% of 50 million is a lot of sperm. We were able to get pregnant once naturally, but it turned out to be a chemical pregnancy.

The 2 vitamins my doc suggested for DH were L-Carnitine and CoQ10. He said those were the only 2 that made a big effect. Also make sure he's taking a multi-vitamin. Zinc is critical to sperm production. Also have him stay out of hot tubs and saunas.

I can't give you exact numbers or anything, but I have heard of cases where certain diet and lifestyle changes have helped with morphology. Also, if I'm not mistaken, morphology is one of those issues that doesn't have a major impact on getting pregnant - especially if your DH has good numbers everywhere else.
Hope things work out for you!!

@bluestriped bee: My DH's SA came back abnormal as well. We were extremely concerned at first, but after doing some research, we found out that as long as the count is good, the other sperm factors (morphology and motility) are not that important. Our RE didn't even bat an eye at his morphology number.

"Despite all of the parameters that are reported on a semen analysis report, the only parameters that have been proven to correlate with the chances of naturally achieving a pregnancy are:

- Concentration of sperm (total sperm count provides a similar estimate) - THIS IS BY FAR THE MOST IMPORTANT PARAMETER
- Sperm morphology

Problems with sperm morphology (how the sperm look) do have an impact on the chances of conception with intercourse, but the effect is relatively small. In fact, in men with high concentrations, the morphology does NOT appear to have any bearing on the chances of natural conception. Note that neither semen volume or motility have any impact on the chances of conception once concentration and morphology are taken into account. "

http://www.metrovanurology.com/content/semen-analysis#SEMEN%20ANALYSIS%20INTERPRETATION

@bluestriped bee: I'm sorry to hear this, we're in the same boat. Our dr. feels that it IS possible to get PG w/ good numbers except poor morphology. These are things he suggested to help improve morphology:

- no caffeine
- limited drinking to 2 drinks per week
- eating healthy
- multivitamin
- exercise
- no smoking

My DH hasn't had another SA since implementing these changes so I don't know if it's helped yet. We're on Cycle 3 of trying, our dr. wanted us to give it 6 months of trying on our own before thinking about other things. But, now I'm realizing I might have a LP defect, so meeting w/ my dr. in a few weeks to discuss that. Frustrating bc we can't really start our 6 mo of trying until I get my stuff figured out! Hang in there, I'm here if you ever want to talk about it!
