My nurse watches for consistent spikes 3 days out of 7 to adjust my meds. This means that if 3 of 7 fastings are high, she'll prescribe more insulin before bed. I'm being really careful about dinners because I don't currently take insulin before dinner and I want to avoid starting for as long as possible.

Do either of you take metformin to help control? It's usually the first thing prescribed...sometimes I have a hard time getting those pills down. They're big!

@banana: oh my goodness, thanks for telling me this!! I have been totally lazy about testing first thing in the morning but I am definitely going to test every morning from now on.

I just tested... 139!!! hehe. I'm glad I took my walk because I'm sure it helped me stay under 140!! Now I wish I had a second slice of cake ;)

@mrs.wagon: Yeah, both my nutritionist and OB told me that even non-diabetics get spikes from time to time. They said sporadic spikes aren't a problem...it's when they are consistent and persistent that it starts to pose a problem. As a rule of thumb, my nutritionist said 2/3 a week is fine. As long as it's not every day for weeks and weeks. That's why your fasting # is important because if your fasting is high, that means you were probably having spikes while you were sleeping every night. My friend had totally normal after meal levels (like in the 120 range) but had high fasting levels (in 110-130 range) that she never took care of. She was told to take insulin but got really lazy with it. Her baby came out almost 10 lbs and had bad jaundice. She was surprised cause her after meal levels were totally within range. It was her fasting levels that were causing the problem.

The 3 of us are very diligent about watching our diet/spikes so we shouldn't have a problem. :)

@banana: really?? that's great!! I had no idea a few spikes a week were ok. Anyway I wasn't going to turn down a slice of cake at my own surprise baby shower :) I just took my version of a long work walk (to the bathroom and back, then to the vending machine downstairs for a diet coke and back) so hopefully that'll help my levels!

@maisymay: My doc wants me under 90 for fasting and 135 for meals. So very similar to your level requirements. I'm also controlling it with diet so no insulin for me. But we'll see cause my fasting levels have slooowly been creeping up. :(

@mrs.wagon: OMG I would die for a slice of cake right now. :) How nice of them to throw you a baby shower. You're very borderline so maybe you won't get too high of a spike. Even if you do, it's ok...it was your baby shower! You had to celebrate! My nutritionist told me that a few spikes a week is totally ok. So I pick and choose when I want my spikes to be. :)

@MaisyMay: Yup, those are the numbers my doc gave me! I'm extremely lucky because I'm borderline so I don't need insulin... just managing with diet.

On that note, my work just threw me a baby shower and I totally ate fruit, potato chips, and a slice of cake. Really worried about the inevitable spike!!

@mrs. wagon: @banana: I love that it's the 3 of us here. I thought it would be, but we usually end up having some pretty good thoughts and encouragements.

Do your docs want you under 95 fasting, 140 an hour after meals?
Mrs. Wagon - How much insulin do you take?

@banana: ugh. Thank goodness I have you... I would have never realized what that number on the side of the lancet meant until you said there were settings!!!! Stupid me!! I've been wondering why I've been bleeding so easily / so much lately too!!!

@mrs.wagon: Yeah, 4 would hurt!!! Even 3 hurts for me. Try 2 and then work your way up. Sometimes it hurts more than other times but it usually doesn't hurt when I use 2. And sometimes I have to repoke because it didn't pierce far enough but I'd rather repoke at a low setting than poke once at a ouchy high setting!

@banana: um, omg. I just realized my lancet (not sure what kind it is, it came with my freestyle lite kit) has settings. It was set to 4. Is that high?? Just put it down to 2...

Hiyee!

Let's see...my glucose intolerance is getting worse (which is usually what happens as you get closer and closer to your due date). So some of the things I was able to eat before, I can't eat anymore. :( But I did have some whole wheat pasta last night and did fine on that. Last week I had a lot of spikes because I was trying to be a little more experimental with food. So I'm being a little more conservative this week. I found that Thai food is horrendous for my glucose levels so I'm avoiding Thai like the plague, which is so hard cause I LOOOVE Thai food.

@mrs.wagon: What type of lancet device are you using? I'm using OneTouch and it doesn't hurt much at all. But with my last pregnancy, I was using a different device and it hurt! Maybe try switching to OneTouch? Also, try a lower setting. I use 2 and it doesn't hurt much at all. Where do you poke yourself? My nutritionist suggested poking the side of my ring finger and that's my "go to" finger now.

Hi there!!

good idea to check in.. :) So after a week of testing my levels after my diagnosis, I had two spikes (one after eating stuffed french toast, eek, and one after a cupcake, eeeek) so the doctor wanted me to do one more week before deciding on whether I needed insulin or not. So I went another week and had no spikes, so she made the next appointment for a month from then.

I must be seriously borderline because even though I have stayed away from french toast and cupcakes, I can eat a reasonable portion of pasta (not even whole wheat pasta) and still get a level of below 110. So I've basically started to eat normally again, just cutting my portions (especially when it comes to carbs) just about in half, and eating more often and it's going well. I don't even bother to test most times because I know I'll be well below 120.

On another note, I've been testing for weeks now and the lancets still hurt :( When will I get used to that??

Hi bees! I know that there are at least 3 of us who are diabetic (either full time or just GD) but I thought it might be nice to have a check in and see how we're all doing.

How are you doing? Are you where your doc wants you?

This past week I only had 3 high sugars out of all of my testing, and even found a few new rewards to give myself. I meet with my diab. nurse and nutritionist tomorrow, but I know that they'll be excited (and won't up my meds!)
