@2littlepumpkins: very VERY good to know. Your experience is making me feel less crazy. I’m thinking second, third, etc. pregnancies should come with an extreme RLP warning.

@nana87: that’s a good thought on rib pain. The nurse said at this gestational age the baby is much too low to bother the ribs. But my second baby bump IS rather large. Two teachers and my principal commented on my size this week—SMH. But the pain before it gets to its most extreme I was thinking felt like what a cracked rib must feel like. Pregnant bodies are so weird!

@jodyblair: yes! Thank you! It sounds like your experience was really similar. And especially good to know that it sounds like it has subsided for now. I was thinking 12 more weeks of this?! Your experience is very reassuring.

I def think it could be rlp or gas, but I also wonder if it could be rib pain, depending on how high your bump has grown

@MRSHONEYBEAR: When I start having issues, sudden movement like a cough could definitely bring on some sharp pain. I've heard of ladies even who don't have any prexisting issues starting to feel sharp pains because of things moving around. I do see a GI doctor but not frequently right now.

I also agree with @jodyblair: that RLP can get way worse with subsequent pregnancies. I had a lot of RLP with this pregnancy (#3) toward my belly button and I don't remember it really HURTING with my last two either. Like can't move kind of pain, ouch. Mostly 2nd trimester but sometimes later on too. For me the RLP is probably more intense than the GI stuff but l can tell it's muscles if that makes sense. It's not really as deep as the GI pain.

I’m 28 weeks now and at 25 weeks I had something very similar. It was AWFUL and the pain was so intense it took my breath away. I could barely move. We ended up calling the midwife and she said it was round ligament pain. The only thing that helped was Tylenol and a warm rice sock.

This is my third baby, and she said it can get worse with subsequent pregnancies. With my first two I had he typical round ligament pain that would happen if I sneezed or rolled over in bed too fast and it would only last for a minute or so. This was so different that I didn’t believe it was actually round ligament pain until I did some googling and read some stories of other women who felt this amount of pain.

I hope you feel better soon. Take it easy!

@2littlepumpkins: Thank you! Do you see anyone for your issues? A GP or a GI specialist? I love my OB but honestly she is not crazy thorough (which most of the time goes well with my personality because I prefer less interventions) so I’m thinking she will probably go along with the nurse/attending “diagnosis” of RLP. I’d love more perspective though. Question—with your GI issues, is it painful when you cough? If i cough when I’m not having an “attack” I am fine but I’ve noticed during the pain if I cough it is out of this world painful in my abdomen. I don’t know what point I’m trying to make with that connection, i guess just wondering if people with GI or RLP issues have that same correlation. I’m sorry you deal with this kind of pain on a regular basis!

I would guess GI issue.. maybe things just moving around? I think L&D looks for common pregnancy stuff, but it could have only been aggravated by pregnancy rather than being an actual pregnancy thing if that makes sense? I have GI issues though, so I have stayed up all night with GI pain in various places and still known it had to do with that. :( I hope you feel better soon.

@Truth Bombs: Thanks for sharing your experience with RLP. I hadn’t considered calling my GP, but that makes sense—they’d have more visibility into other sources. I kept thinking at l&d, “aren’t they going to pull out the sonogram and check the placenta or other organs?! Or at least take blood to check pancreas?!” But now I realize their job is to make sure you’re not in labor or that nothing life/pregnancy threatening is happening. I’ll check with my GP for a second opinion. Thanks!

My understand is that you have round ligaments holding your uterus in place both at the bottom and the top. Most people feel the pain the lower ligaments in the groin, but it’s possible to have pain in the upper ligaments as well. All that being said, the intensity of the pain is worrying to me. Yes RLP took my breath away, and yes it sometimes resulted in an ache that hung around for a long while. But pain at a high intensity for an extended period of time doesn’t sound right to me. I would maybe go to your general practitioner? You may be feeling something unrelated to your pregnancy like a GI issue that the ER failed to consider.

Help! Do you think this sounds like round ligament pain? Short story: ended up in l&d with extreme left side abdominal pain and the best they could determine it was RLP but it doesn’t sound/feel right to me.

Details: I’m 27 wks with my second. Yesterday throughout the work day I was having pretty consistent pain in my left upper abdomen area parallel to my naval. It was annoying but I was able to go about my day and just kept my hand on that area most of the day. I figured gas or regular aches and pains. By evening I was having sharp pains on and off in my upper left abdomen and by 11pm it was equivalent intensity-wise to labor pain but only on the left side and not the same tightening sensation — more stabbing. I couldn’t stand, I couldn’t talk through the pain, i could just moan and cry basically. I finally called the doc and they sent me to L&D. After monitoring they determined I wasn’t in preterm labor, no UTI or kidney stones, not gas. They said it was most likely round ligament pain and to take Tylenol as needed. By the time I got home at 4am the pain was mostly gone and I was feeling a little crazy for going to L&d for RLP pain. Today I felt a handful of stabs but then tonight I had another full on episode of consistent stabbing pain for a little over an hour, wincing, moaning, yada, yada.

Anyhow, I believe them, I do. But from what I know if RLP it is more located in the groin area and is related to certain fast movements and doesn’t last for long periods of time. This is located high up and the pain is just so extreme—like take your breath away and feels more like an attack...if that makes sense.

Have you had RLP that sounds similar? Have you had similar pain that was found to be something different? Suggestions on what I should ask my OB about when I call her on Monday? Thanks dr bees!
