Thanks everyone! I'll probably go with a smaller backpack. If I'm going to have a lot to carry, maybe I should just use the stroller!

I have a bag from LLBean that has straps to use as a backpack or a tote. Mine is big, but I needed that with twins. I'd think as long as it wasn't overpacked it wouldn't be overwhelming and would have the big advantage of still being hands free.

However, I do have a lumbar pack from Mountain Hardware that I absolutely love. While I mostly use it for outdoor excursions, it's a perfect size for a wallet, water bottle, keys, etc. You could probably fit your diaper bag essentials in there, but not much extra.

I love the pocket in my Ergo and when I run an errand thats what I use. I try to put my cell phone in the back pocket of my pants and put my keys and wallet in the ergo.

I have a Beco, too (Gemini) and I have a Timi & Leslie diaper bag that can be a shoulder bag or backpack style but I find the straps too cumbersome and they interfere or bump the Beco straps a lot, which is annoying, so I'm also on the look out for a new diaper bag and will be following this thread. :)

I toted around two babies in NYC by babywearing. My first DD was in an Ergo daily to get to daycare for a few months and my second DD was in a Beco Gemini a lot too.

So when babywearing, we have a Skip Hop backpack. It's a compact sized backpack and it worked well for us. The trick is not to overpack. Honestly, any small-ish backpack would work, but I like that the Skip Hop one came with a soft changing pad.

I also loved that the Ergo had a little zipper pocket. This really helped for short walks/errands around the neighborhood. I ditched the backpack those times and just carried a wristlet since we were always pretty close to home.

So we live in NYC and plan on using the Beco carrier a lot. To those of you with similar carriers, what diaper bag do you use? I imagine a shoulder bag would just slip off and can't imagine how I would use a messenger style bag. A backpack just seems overwhelming. My husband is planning on using a lumbar pack, it's like a fannypack but backwards. Thanks!
