I only have 2 kids but have used a backpack since #2 was born, so much easier! I tried on a bunch of North Face backpacks but they all were heavier and larger than I wanted or needed, I ended up getting this much cheaper High Sierra from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/High-Sierra-Backpack-8-5-Inch-Chartreuse/dp/B0074W7U1E?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

It's pretty lightweight, on the smaller side and well made. My one complain is it only has one pocket for a water bottle.

I got a regular under armour back pack when my second was born. It works fine- I wanted something I could use well after baby days, and I didn't need the compartments for bottles and things like that since we hardly do bottles, but I wanted side pockets for our regular water bottles. It works well but I actually think the smaller LL Bean one would have been better. But having a backpack inst as of a shoulder back is SO MUCH EASIER.

I have and love my Petunia Pickle Bottom boxy backpack for all the same reasons stated above by @CATERW:

Mine is almost two years old and looks brand new - baby #2 is on the way and I'll be using it as a backpack more when he arrives. So far I use it primarily as an over-shoulder or messenger style bag. I love how long the strap adjusts because I usually just hang it over my stroller bars any time I'm out with the stroller. Best part is the integrated (but removable/washable) changing pad that has made for easy and sanitary diaper changes anywhere. Surface wipes clean and takes a beating without showing wear. Love it.

I really want this Patagonia bag. Apparently it's super light weight and can be used as a backpack or a shoulder bag. I used and adored my husband's (heavier and larger) backpack as a diaper bag when I was traveling solo with the kids (infant and preschooler). Now I'm jonesing for a smaller one of my own.

Lily Jade. They convert from backpack to shoulder bag to crossbody bag. There is an insert that can be removed so the bag can be used as a regular tote. It's great quality and fits everything!!!

@dcw6411: I have a Petunia Pickle Bottom that I got on clearance for $90 and it was totally worth it... The style I got comes with a velcroed on fold out changing table liner so you don't have to worry about changing baby in a public bathroom. I love that it can come off and be washed separately if it gets yucky and it is a very thick material so I feel like my daughter was really protected from grossness. I have washed the entire bag many times as well and hung it up to dry. It's 2 1/2 years old and looks perfectly brand new. The outside of it is water resistant and I love the pattern. The inside has a bunch of pockets so I can keep everything organized even in a giant bag. It's big enough for tons of diapers, wipes, toys, books, crayons and a coloring book, two water bottles, a change of clothes for baby and change of top for me, a nursing cover, and snacks or a small lunch box. I just switched to using a smaller bag since DD just needs a water bottle, small snack, and change of undies/ backup diaper nowadays but I am really glad I have a nice big diaper bag backpack for when I have two kiddos to lug around. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend.

Don't pay full price though- they have secret sales that you can use if you sign up for their e-mail list. I would also definitely buy a used one at a consignment store since they stay so nice.

I was using a skip hop backpack (the owl) but it gets dirty so quickly. I just bought a black Lululemon backpack that I am pretty excited about! We are very active on the weekends and have a lot of summer camping trips planned with the boys. I have a 3.5 and almost 2 year old and will be trying for another soon.

My lust list is a Lily Jade convertible bag! Even after kids you can use it as a regular tote bag.

Currently I have 2 regular fashion back packs that I use. I didn't want a diaper bag AND a pack pack diaper bag so I went for regular back packs.

I love our Ju Ju Be BRB as well. We actually used it more with one kid than now with two. Our 3.5 year old doesn't need much these days other than granola bars, underwear, and a change of clothes. More stuff goes towards the baby. Usually, I use a Ju Ju Be Light for the baby and take a Be Quick full of stuff for the big kid when we go to the park.

I have a Tom Bihn diaper bag, and I love it! It's a messenger style bag with great organization. So many compartments and fits so much without looking huge. Very comfortable to wear all day. Also gender neutral so DH uses it too. I plan on using it long after my diapering days are over.

@bluestriped bee: Yea I think this is the one I'm thinking of. But the actual bag part is much larger (full size diaper bag) than what I want to carry around at the park. By age 2 and 4, my older kids really dont need much (we can go back to the car if we need a change of clothes).

I'm in the same boat! I like my big diaper bag for big trips or long dinners at a restaurant. But when we are at the park and I have to chase kids, I want something i can throw on my back that just holds a water bottle, a diaper, and some wipes (plus my normal phone, wallet, keys). Its hot here so I dont want anything large, thick or heavy.

I need some suggestions, so I am turning to you wonderful ladies for your expertise! I am expecting baby #3 in July. My two older children will have just turned 4 and 2 when baby arrives. I have always used and loved my Kate Spade diaper bag, but I am worried about having an over the shoulder bag to carry while I am trying to wrangle three kids 4 and under. I am thinking it may be time to shift to a backpack style bag so I have my arms free for child carrying. I should say that right now I am just using my purse, but before I leave my house it is always overflowing with kids water bottles, snacks, hand wipes etc. Basically its constantly trashed, so in reality I should still be using a diaper bag or at least a larger tote style purse, but I have been a slacker. :silly:

What back pack brands have you ladies used that you love?

Also, if you have three kids that are all quite little, is the non backpack style diaper bag still working for you?
