DH got an Eddie Bauer diaper backpack as a gift and we both use it, it's really nice and it's easy to use since you can throw it on your back and go!

DH is a stay-at-home dad. He uses a North Face backpack that used to be my backpack in college! It's still in great shape, plenty big enough (we cloth diaper), and doesn't scream "diaper bag." When we're done diapering, it will go back to being his biking companion. :)

@Mrs. Yoyo: @Mrs. Tricycle: I guess I should add that DH is a WAHD and is with DS running errands more than I ever am. Diaper Dude was a necessity for him. While I, on the other hand, have a pretty PPB diaper bag that's barely seen the light of day, haha

I bought DH the "scout" by petunia pickle bottom. It has a liner that can be changed into a laptop bag from a diaper bag, and the side bottle pockets snap off, for when he no longer needs it for baby stuff. It was really pricey, but DH LOVES it. It's leather and really well made. They have other ppb guy friendly options that are also really nice.

@Mrs. Yoyo: I'm with mrs. Yoyo - DH has the Diaper Dude bag, which works great (plenty of room), but he never goes anywhere by himself with the baby (a least at this stage), and when we're out together, I carry the diaper bag and he carries the car seat/baby. So I'd skip a DH diaper bag next time and just stick to my pretty girly one.

DH wanted a backpack to use. My parents are buying it for him for Christmas. It is just from REI but has lots of compartments. Then we will just buy a changing pad liner and bottle cooler. He didn't like the Diaper Dude bags. My brother has one though, and I don't remember him ever saying anything bad about it.

DH just uses a regular messenger bag. Since he is rarely alone with LO out of the house for more than a couple hours it's not really necessary for him to carry much more than the basics. What about a Timbuktu bag? That might work well for a laptop as well.

DH just carries around our Petunia Pickle bag. He doesn't care. Keeping one diaper bag stocked is full time job for us, I can't imagine two bags.

I actually got hubs a regular messenger bag for Christmas, which will double as a laptop and baby bag. He's been wanting a laptop bag, and he definitely won't want to carry my VB flowered diaper bag when he's alone with LO. It's not as compartmentalized as my diaper bag, but it does have pockets and is very roomy. He won't be without me with the baby very often, but it will definitely work to carry the necessities. I feel very comfortable spending the money on it because it's something he can carry even when he doesn't have LO or she's outgrown the diaper bag stage.

ETA: What about something like this from REI? It definitely doesn't look like a diaper bag, but it's got tons of room and different compartments that would work for baby things. Plus, it's got a completely separate part for the laptop, so a spilled bottle or food can't mess up his computer.

We have the Diaper Dude, but my DH probably doesn't use it enough to comment on its durability. He likes it when he uses it, though.

FWIW, he insisted on having his own baby bag and it was a waste of money for us for the amount he uses it.

Hm I found that it was big enough for day to day stuff (extra diapers, wipes, change of clothes, blanket, and bottle) and I figure if we need stuff for an extended trip/all day thing, I'll probably be there and well have my diaper bag, in addition if necessary (and mine is bigger). But if he's going to he using it regularly, and putting a laptop in it, then the one we have is probably not big enough. If you can find a laptop bag with enough inside/outside pockets, that sounds like a good idea.

I will say that Lo is 8.5 wks old and dh hasn't had the need to use his diaper bag bc he either wears Lo or I'm with them.

@hilsy85: See, I've also heard these two options aren't roomy enough either. Do you find that it really holds plenty? He could use a new laptop bag, too, and I was thinking it would be nice if I could find something that could serve as both, but it doesn't sound like the SH would hold much more beyond the bare minimum of baby needs.

So, I want to get DH a manly diaper bag for his birthday (I'll be using my diaper bag as a purse too and a black messenger bag isn't really my style, so we'll "need" two). Everything I've read though about the most affordable options -- the Diaper Dude messenger bag, Skip Hop Duo/Dash and the DadGear backpack or messenger -- is turning me off. Either the bags are too small to be practical, or cheaply made and start coming apart after a few months.

I'm not opposed to spending a tiny bit more (maybe up to $150) but only if it's really REALLY worth it. I saw the SoYoung Charlie bag touted on here in a blog post once, and I like the looks of it for DH. He's not a metro kinda guy, so anything like patent leather or too "hipster" isn't going to work for him. Basic black is the way to go.

So, can anybody vouch for the Charlie bag being actually worth the money? Have the Skip Hop/Diaper Dude/DadGear and have actual good experiences with them? Or have another idea?

ETA: He also mentioned the other night that he really needs to get a new laptop bag, so something roomy enough to serve both purposes would be great. Also ETA that I've looked into the Skip Hop options and their reviews are also kinda lukewarm.
