@hitchhiker: Very good points! I have the original fawn design diaper bag that I'm still using. It is heavy on its own. I'm thinking this will be for school field trips that I, so far, have always attended as a chaperone. I went to a monster jam recently and wished I had a backpack. For the things you are describing, I would definitely choose something else, too! Thank you for bringing up these points, though.

In the summer I have a small backpack from target that I use since we spend more time outside and at parks but honestly most of the time I don't have anything except my purse. I keep a change of clothes, wipes, and a "bored box" (stickers, crayons, coloring books, hot wheels cars, etc) in the trunk of my car. On my way out the door I grab a bag and throw in a few snacks and their waters but it usually stays in the car. It's very freeing to not use a traditional diaper bag anymore!

My boys are 4 and 5, and they each have their own small backpack (Wildkin 12 inch preschool backpack) that they carry when we go out. They hold a change of clothes, 1-2 toys/books/tablets/other distractions, snacks, water bottles, hand sanitizer, hand wipes, and a few other small odds and ends, Less for me to carry, and makes it easy to split up when the kids have different activities/appointments.

@agold: It’s for you! You should get whatever you want. I’ll just note, though, that leather backpacks tend to be pretty heavy, so you might want to consider what activities you’ll be using it for and then decide. Ours gets used most for hiking and roaming around the city, so I wouldn’t want the extra weight.

I leave clothes in the car year round but all else goes in a backpack. I have one that's super lightweight, like one of those drawstring ones but with padded straps. It has two mesh water bottle pockets. So by itself it weighs nothing and easily holds stuff for two kids.

I'm currently looking into the same thing! I've been looking at a leather Madewell backpack. If I had a boy, I would get the Rawlings leather backpack. I am considering this something like a purse alternative, and so I want it to be something for me, and less something for the kids, if that makes sense.

We have a collapsible tote in each car to hold some things. Then we keep a backpack partially stocked in our mudroom at all time. I replenish as needed and add things based on what we are doing. Though I also carry a cross body purse and only carry the backpack if I have to, otherwise it stays in the car at our destination. This is the backpack we use (we actually have two in case we need to pack enough that DH and I each need to carry one): https://tinyurl.com/92r3npmj

Sometimes I will switch to a water resistant tote bag if it will be easier to have a bag that will stay upright when I set it down.

I just use a regular backpack. We really only need it if we are going to be out for a few hours. My kids are 5 and almost 10.

I love my MZ Wallace bag - easy to clean, lightweight and available in several sizes/colors. I can fit a lot in it but it still feels stylish and not bulky

Hey all! What kind of bags have you been using with your older kids? My kiddos are now 4 and 6, so they are out of the diaper stage. However, they are still very much in the stage of needing me to bring water bottles, coloring books for restaurants, hats, and snacks. I had been using a large diaper bag backpack (which I loved) since my oldest was born, but the zippers are starting to break. I don’t need anything quite so large considering I’m no longer toting around diapers, toys, tons of extra clothes. What are the more streamlined functional options for older kids? Thanks!
