@Andrea: it's the truth, girlfriend!

I don't know how people really think sh*t doesn't stink, especially once the babes start eating solid food!

@looch: haha. your comments always crack me up.

FWIW we use the diaper dekor plus. i think it does a pretty good job unless you leave the diapers in there for too many days and then even i can smell it. LOL.

My honest feeling is that people can't smell their own diapers, so they think their diaper pail works. I can not tell you how many nurseries I have walked into and been blown over by the stench of diapers.

I'd get a stainless step-on can, like a simple human, but a small one and empty it daily.

We got a plain garbage can with a swing lid. We cloth diaper, but I just put an Arm and hammer baking soda pack under the lid and we have no stink. I wash every 2-3 days but wash the pail out once a week.

I ended up getting 2 wet bags from Swaddlebees:
http://www.swaddlebees.com/Products/Accessories/bwbag_2

They hold about a dozen newborn disposable diapers (about a day's worth) and the contain any smell- I don't notice anything. I have a hook on my changing table/dresser that it hangs from. I empty it in the outside garbage once a day, and wash the bag about once a week. I'm happy with it, plus they have such cute patterns!

We have this one: http://www.simplehuman.com/products/trash-cans/kitchen/rectangular-plastic-step.html

We CD and out wet bags fit right on no problem. The trash can is a step on with self closing lid and you can also lock the lid which is a nice feature for when DS is older. We loved it so much that we got one for the kitchen.

ETA: If your not CDing, this can can take a regular kitchen bag. It says that it's compatible with SimpleHuman product #__ for the bags, but a regular kitchen bag fits too. It contains the smells nice and keeps pets out as well.

We have a diaper genie for the poo (I put poopy disposable lineres and wipes in there so the dog won't get at it) and it works really well. We have a cheap diaper pail for our dirty cloth diapers and a cloth liner for the diaper pail so we're not using any trash bags. But if we wanted to it would take regular trash bags, and it has a lid which helps with the smell.

What kind of garbage cans did you use in your nurseries? I've heard mixed reviews on whether diaper pails are really worth it. Ultimately I'd like a garbage can that will contain the smell but I don't want to have to buy special bags to line the can. Any suggestions?
