We used a service with our first daughter...

1) are they easy to use esp for new caregivers? (The service comes with a hour long in home demo)
Ours weren't prefolds, they were fitteds, but we got zero training and did ok.
2) is it better to get the same diapers every week?
Do you mean style, or exact same diapers? We did not get the same diapers each week, but had no problems.

3) are cloth diapers in a diaper pail all week totally stinky and gross?
Ours were stinky in the heat in particular, but only when the pail was open. It was a pretty ammonia-ish scent.

4) if you cloth diaper what about the wipes- cloth or disposable?
We used disposable wipes.

5) was your DCP ok with prefolds?
Ours weren't prefolds, but our DCP was ok with cloth!

6) how long did you use the service? What type of diaper did you switch to after?
We used it for 6 months. The hardest time was at the beginning, because they kept shorting us diapers, which was so.so.so. frustrating. We used it through the end of the 6 months, but decided to buy cloth and do them ourselves. I didn't mind the extra laundry and I liked being able to control my numbers, wash them if I was getting low, but also not have them sitting for a whole week for the service. It was overall, a great introduction to cloth diapering though!

We use a service! There's no way I'd CD without it, the idea of that much poop & pee in my new w/d is a no-go.

1) are they easy to use esp for new caregivers? (The service comes with a hour long in home demo)
- My mom had a bit of a learning curve, but she does for anything. I think my MIL figured it out pretty quick. (An in-home demo sounds amazing!)

2) is it better to get the same diapers every week?
- We didn't have this option, but I like that they are switched out often.

3) are cloth diapers in a diaper pail all week totally stinky and gross?
- With a newborn, no. It started getting stinky with solids, so we switched to a much better sealed can that auto-opens. It's awesome.

4) if you cloth diaper what about the wipes- cloth or disposable?
- Disposable, same washing issue :)

5) was your DCP ok with prefolds?
- N/A

6) how long did you use the service? What type of diaper did you switch to after?
- Still using at 15mo, plan to use through potty training.

Just a follow up- we got AIO's this week, and I do like them a lot better. DH vastly prefers them. He's yet to get the hang of the prefolds, but now he doesn't have to.

We were diaper service dropouts, switched to disposables after my maternity leave was over.

1) are they easy to use esp for new caregivers? It was okay since DD was very young and didn't move much. I know people use them for older babies but I really can't imagine how they stay in place...or trying to put both a Snappi and cover on a baby who has decided to fight diaper changes.

2) is it better to get the same diapers every week? Didn't matter to us.

3) are cloth diapers in a diaper pail all week totally stinky and gross? It got a little stinky at the end of the week but it was okay overall. But DD was EBF -- not sure if formula poo residue would smell more?

4) if you cloth diaper what about the wipes- cloth or disposable? We always used disposable wipes unless we were dealing with diaper rash.

5) was your DCP ok with prefolds? Yes, but a separate cover is required for each diaper change, they can't reuse them. This was actually one of the reasons we decided to stop the diaper service -- it wasn't actually much cheaper than disposable diapers to begin with, and I didn't want to shell out for 10-12 more covers when I wasn't totally committed to CDing and, in particular using prefolds, until potty-training was done.

6) how long did you use the service? What type of diaper did you switch to after? We tried doing cloth at home and disposables at daycare for a couple weeks after I went back to work, so I think DD was about 4 months old when I cancelled the service. Aside from the cover issue, we ran into a sizing issue where DD was soaking through the size we were getting ALL THE TIME but the next size up was way, way too big. Doubling the prefold wasn't a great option because a) it made her butt too bulky for her to move well and b) we would have needed to up the number of prefolds we ordered by quite a lot, which was more $$. We used Honest diapers for awhile but had awful daily blowouts and ended up switching to Bambo Nature, which we still use and like a lot. Even using premium brand disposables, we're not spending a whole lot more than we would have with the diaper service. I feel a little guilty about the landfill issue, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

We use prefolds from a diaper service and aios. My daughter is 12 weeks.

1) The prefold and cover system is super easy to use. I bought snappies, but ended up not using them. I simply pad fold the prefold and set it in the cover. Very few leaks, usually involving the fit of the cover. I pre-fold all of my prefolds when they get delivered, and pre-pair the prefolds and covers a few times a week.

2) is it better to get the same diapers every week? I honestly don't think it matters. I trust that they're all clean.

3) are cloth diapers in a diaper pail all week totally stinky and gross? Surprisingly, no. I'm sensitive to smells, and thought this would be an issue, but its not. I just use a regular trash can with a lid, lined with the plastic bag the diaper service provides. All covers and aios go into a wet bag, and get washed every 3rd day (it was every other day when she was a newborn).

4) if you cloth diaper what about the wipes- cloth or disposable? I currently use disposable, but keep meaning to switch to cloth.

5) was your DCP ok with prefolds? I currently stay home.

6) how long did you use the service? What type of diaper did you switch to after? We've been using the service since she was born, so 12 weeks. The 13 weeks my parents paid for are up next week. I am considering stopping the service and washing my own. That doesn't seem to be quite as big of a deal now as I thought it would be. If we go that route, which is likely, I'll stick with a mix of aios and prefolds and covers.

We just started a service a week ago, so I can't say 100%, but so far I love them. They do prefolds as well, though we're on the waiting list for AIO's. I'm not actually sure I care about switching, but I think DH would like them better. I will second what @bluestriped bee: said- DH hates touching the wet prefolds. They just are wet because there's nothing to stop the pee from spreading to the edges, the cover just keeps it in.

So far I've had zero trouble learning to use them (and our service only uses YouTube videos to teach you), DH is okay at it, and my mom is terrible. But A- they're both a bit inept at that sort of thing, whereas I like folding things very precisely, and B- I've been the one to change her nearly every time (SAHM), so they haven't gotten practice.

Our service always gives you back "your" diapers, so I don't really know whether that's worth paying for.

I don't think the diaper pail is any smellier than a normal diaper genie or anything. If anything it's better. I taped a q-tip dipped in lavender essential oil to the underside of the lid, so I don't notice anything. Taking the bag out is a little smellier, but again, no worse than emptying the trash with disposables.

We use disposable wipes. It seemed like cloth defeated the purpose of the service (not having poo in my washer), since they don't launder wipes.

We don't do daycare, and just started, so I'm no help on the last two. I will say that we still do disposables at night. LO doesn't pee when she sleeps, or during wake-ups (I guess she doesn't wake up fully enough), so she pees a TON in the mornings. I don't trust the cloth ones to hold it.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I bought my wipes and have two types of wipes with different thicknesses so I can't answer that. For our standard normal diapers, I use one wipe at each diaper change. For poop explosions, I might use 2-3.

Prefolds are wet with pee or poop. Since you reuse covers throughout the day, you have to put the prefolds in the pail.

Nope, wet pails aren't recommended for cloth diapers. I just stick the prefold or AIO right into the wet bag.

I'll answer your questions from my experience (after a month).

1) I think figuring out which fold to use might be tricky at first. I used the standard newspaper fold at first, then switched to the jelly roll fold and now we do the bikini twist. For our preemies, I wanted the crotch to be narrow. It's an evolving process. We have been using preemie sized prefolds for the last two months and I had a huge leak two night ago. Realized that the preemie prefolds should have been stopped a while ago. Oops. They can now be used as doublers in the future.
Oh, for DH, remembering to tuck the back, front and legs is something we still sorta deal with. MIL came out and was just not comfortable with using the prefolds so we let her buy diapers while she was here.
2) I wouldn't pay extra to get the same diapers. I trust that they have a pretty clean process.
3) I think it does smell when I take them out of my dekor diaper pail. I really like the used dekor pails I got. We only go about 2-3 days between washes. Don't know if I could go a whole week. Though, the wet bags I got do definitely keep the smell in.
4) I use cloth, DH uses disposables. But like I said above we use a Wipe warmer. I was told that a ️Wipe warmer wasn't necessary and I didn't register or have plans to get one but my babies hated hated cold wipes. My Brother just happened to give me theirs. I got a second one at a consignment sale.
5) DCP is day care provider?? Does not apply to us since DH is a SAHD, but we did look into a local daycare and they said they can do cloth diapers.
6) NA

@bluestriped bee: how many cloth wipes would you need a week not to do laundry? The cloth wipe ervice add on is 10/$1/wk.

Why are the prefolds wet? Do we have to fill up the diaper pail with water and then place them in the laundry bag? Eww

@avivoca: #2 private wash would make the diaper service more than disposables, glad you think it's not worth it. The first batch are used prefolds anyway.

We planned on using a service with our twins because we thought laundry would to be too much for us.

Before the babies came, I always planned to do prefolds and covers during the day and AIOs at night.
DS had a procedure so he was kept in disposables and we started cloth with DD.

Anyway, I noticed that laundry wasn't that bad and skipped the cloth diaper service. I had stocked up on preemie and newborn prefolds.

The one thing with prefolds and covers that DH and I never thought about is having to touch a wet prefold. DH thinks that's the worst part. All along I thought he would hate taking the time to roll, snappie and use a cover.

Anyway, back to some of your questions. DH likes disposable wipes and I like cloth wipes. We have two wipe warmers (one for each) and I love using cloth wipes. The wipes stay so much warmer than disposables. I have thin flannel wipes for wet diapers and thicker Grovia wipes for poopy.
My sister CDs with prefolds and AIOs and she does not use cloth wipes. So I stocked up on disposable wipes before the babies came.
