My ten pounder couldn't fit newborns. My 8.9 pounder wore newborns home from the hospital and then not again.
I'd keep one pack in case return the other.

Don't worry so much about sizing - most places let you do an even exchange even if your receipt is expired. I would just stick with 1s. If you are in NBs the hospital will most likely send some home with you. Our hospital gave size 1 Swaddlers standard but DS was so small they brought him NBs. So we took both sizes home. It might just be easier to go buy a small pack of NBs as you need them.

All told my diaper stash was something like 1000 Swaddlers? I think it was 1 box of NB, 2 boxes of size 1s, 2 boxes of size 2s, 3 boxes of size 3, and 2 boxes of size 4s (because it was all they had during a sale). I ended up exchanging the size 1 diapers for NBs and then exchanged the size 4 diapers for size 1s. I supplemented the size 1s with a small package of Target brand because I didn't need a full box and we needed to buy an extra box of size 2s at some point.

Most moms told me to stock up on size 3s as they were the size their kid was in the longest. We are on our 3rd box of size 3s now at almost 7 months and I think we may need to buy a fourth box before moving to size 4. I was told not to stock up on anything bigger than 3 because some babies don't need a bigger size than that for a long time or because at that point they may need a different type of diaper (i.e. Cruisers instead of Swaddlers). We're on our last box of my stash (aside from that one box of size 2s we bought) and I'm pretty happy with myself - the stash (including 2000 or so wipes) lasted about 7 months! I only spent about $150 on the whole stash when I was extreme couponing while I was pregnant so it was definitely worth it.

Actually, I would skip newborns and only buy a couple of boxes on size 1s. DS1 never even fit in newborns. My boys zoomed through all the small sizes. If you're trying to buy ahead and create a stash, I'd get bigger sizes too.

DS was 6 pounds 15 ounces at birth and was in NB for 6-7 weeks. But he lost a lot of weight at the beginning and was a pretty slow gainer. The hospital sent us home with a ton of diapers and I think we went through 3 boxes of Swaddlers and had a few leftover that I used as overnight nursing pads, LOL. He was actually in size 1s the shortest amount of time - we were using size 2s for nights by 10 or 11 weeks. He was in size 3s for nights starting around 6 months.

I had an 8 pounder and the hospital gave us size 1 right off the bat. I used a 36 pack of newborns at home, but only because I had them. Size 1 fit better and is cheaper per diaper.

I found that Pampers size 1 is much bigger than Huggies size 1. DD is 23" long, so a skinny girl. The Huggies fit much better now. Saving my Pampers stock for a bit later.

My LO was 7 lbs, 1 oz when she was born and they didn't even use newborn size in the hospital--just folded over the 1's. We had one box of newborns, but once we blew through those, we just went to straight to ones and folded them over! We never had any issues using size ones.

It's such a guessing g game. I'd keep the NBs that you have but if you stock up on any, stick up in 1s. You may find that you need more NBs than you think though.

My LO was 8lbs 13oz at birth and over 9lbs at 2 weeks. He wore newborn diapers for the first 4 weeks. We had to go out and buy more because we didn't think he'd be in them for so long because he measured so big my entire pregnancy. I guess it depends more on their shape?

@BeachMama: Interesting! I wonder if DS will be long and skinny (like DH) or more chunky (like my family). Apparently his head is measuring in the 95th percentile.

@blackbird: Hmm. I was under the impression that I needed newborns for the cord cutout, but then I heard you could just fold size 1s over.

@Littlebit: Thanks! I'm making a trip back to Target today. Thankfully I kept the receipt somewhere I could find it.

DS was 9.5 lbs he just barely fit in NB, at the hospital they ended up bring in 1s to put him in. I had bought 1 case of NB and tried to use them but he leaked :( I agree maybe return one and get a size up. It all depends how "chubby" / long they are.

Yes, return one of the newborn packs. My LO was 7lb5oz and only fit in newborns for a week and a half. He blew through size 1's also. From what I've read size 2's and 3's are the sizes most babies are in longest. Those are the ones I stocked up on and I just had to buy some 3's at 6.5months.

DS was 9lbs 11oz at birth and at 2 weeks old is still in newborn diapers. But he's also in the 99th percentile for height so I think he's a little less chunky than other 9lb babies. I'd say maybe return one of the packs of NB for size 1. You can always run out and buy another NB pack if you need it.

I'm wondering how many diapers I should have on hand before LO is born. Last week I picked up 2 giant packs of newborn size (88 diapers each).

LO is already measuring big already - I'm 34 weeks and he was nearly 6 lbs last week. It seems like he's on track to be 8-9 lbs when I'm induced at 39 weeks.

I know newborn diapers go up to 10 lbs - should I return one of the newborn packs and get some size 1s? Should I get multiple packs of size 1s? We live very close to the store, so it wouldn't be that hard to pick up more after he arrives.

Thanks!
