I do the following (doesn't go along with fluff love):
1) cold rinse & spin with a little funk rock added in
2) hot wash with two scoops Bumgenius detergent, then two extra rinses
3) add 1/4 bleach every 1-2 months

I get occasional stink creeping in which is why I do the bleach, but no ammonia issues.

Yes to needing more water, I sometimes would put some in before beginning the cycle.

You might want to throw a towel in with them to trick the washer into thinking you need more water. This is our routine: warm rinse, hot wash with detergent (heavy cycle) extra cold rinse. I also use Ecos free and clear, which is cloth diaper approved. If all else fails, try stripping them.

@knittylady: nope - only hot water. We also dry them on a clothesline outside.

We have a top loader and have never had this issue. Could it be your detergent? We use Charlie's soap powder and only hot water. Once a month we also add a cup of beach to strip the diapers.

I can't seem to get my dipes clean in our new he top loader. Arg! I'm following fluff love university and it's still urine-y after coming out of the dryer. Using powder tide...

How do you wash your dipes in an he?
